Exactly. Still for something like this, its not like its exactly cheap to ship. What worries me about the email is that it suggests that this engine isn’t as popular as they would have hoped. I need it to be popular so more repower options get made.

Engines cost hundreds of dollars to ship. Doing a free shipping sale is enough that someone would go ahead in order one from you instead of trying to find one locally and picking it up themselves.

I keep looking at M37s with a Cummins swap and like what I see, but taking out the original flathead 6 makes me cringe. I don’t think I can do it.

Well I can’t do it now anyway, I just bought it and all I’m doing is painting and getting it CA compliant. Tires are good etc.. but eventually I will get a four wheel disk kit they make and probably have the rear end geared for 20% more on road speed. The Cummins would get great mileage and range while making it easier to drive in town. As long as it doesn’t cut it all up.

Would be sweet in a tastefully lifted Jeep Liberty with the NSG370. You could buy the Jeep, engine, and all the other stuff you need and be on the road for well under $30k. That’s good value, and unique as well.

If you address the weakness of the system too, I hear they aren’t bad. Decent flex, pretty strong (front end is a little weak) and the later versions weren’t bad looking.

Whenever my mind wanders to diesel swapping my Raider, I immediately write off the Cummins 2.8 due to cost, then briefly consider the 4bt before deciding against it due to weight, which brings me to the much more sane option of one of the Mitsubishi turbo diesels that came in Monteros from the factory elsewhere in the world. I think the 4D56 is the one most people go with. Then there’s the fact that an LS would probably fit....
Anyways. All of the above is irrelevant until the supposed time bomb 4G54 decides to die on me.

Apart from the wider crowd that Cummins is aiming for, the Toyota-specific re-power idea that keeps sparking in my brain is the ubiquitous 1GR-FE 4.0L V6.
Decent HP/TQ numbers, relatively lightweight, should be one around every corner by now. Seems like it would be worth looking at for adapting to an 80-series.
Has anyone seen it done?

I’ve heard of one being done. Most people that invest in a swap just go right to LS. The one I remember seeing on mud was a 6 speed swap too.

This is the kind of savagery I need to sooth my pain over finding out how ridiculously expensive this is, even for a new crate engine. I can do a Toyota diesel swap, including all of the parts, for less than half of that. So much disappoint, no wow.

Talking to the guys at the local junkyard they wouldn’t want much for the drivetrain since it’s an oddball and they don’t sell online. They do come through since there are quite a few people who drive their vehicles across the border from Quebec around here and end up selling them. After that it’s only a matter of time until rust destroys them. Either way, unless you can do a swap for pretty damn cheap it’s hard to justify either cost on an older vehicle unless it’s in pristone condition, you have the cashola, and you just want it bad.

So in my kicking of internet tires, I recalled that Kohler makes some non-road use diesel engines:
