Kinja'd!!!

The world’s largest manmade explosion (up until the atomic bombs) goes off in Halifax harbour after the Mont-Blanc and the Imo collided, killing 2000, wounding 9000. It leveled two square kilometres of Halifax, and launched the shaft of the Mont-Blanc’s 500 kilogram anchor three kilometres. Truly a horrific accident in Canadian history.

I’ve been to the museum in Halifax and seen and touched parts of the Monte Blanc. The steel is so thick and is so warped it is incredible.

For some reason it reminds me of the Doña Paz tragedy, the worst peacetime disaster at sea, which was also a ship collision.

I never knew about this. I’m reminded of the Texas City disaster  back in 1947. And you’re right, that’s a pretty awful article. Wikipedia is better.

This is a picture of the pyrocumulus cloud from the Halifax explosion.

Despite passing through Halifax for a day a few years back I never knew about the explosion until I read about it this summer. Truly a horrific and devastating event, and one that led to building that super long dock in Sandy Hook bay, NJ to keep the same thing from happening to NYC. Now I want to go back to Halifax and see the museum.

I live an hour from Halifax....used to the story now, but it is still incredible. There is a certain part of the city that was spared destruction because of a hill that spared it the brunt of the blast. There is a church (St. Paul’s) there with debris that flew through the front windows and embedded itself into the wall. The church wasn’t structurally damaged in the blast and still stands, but the piece of metal is still embedded into the wall to this day...
