So the whole article is summed up here:

Buy the biggest engine you can get.

On trucks, always buy a 4x4 and always get the heavy-duty options.

If there’s a sport package, take it. If there’s a package that just LOOKS sporty but isn’t different in any worthwhile sense—like Audi’s S-line, which makes your A4 look like an S4—get it anyway.

If there’s a manual transmission, take it.

If you can get a wagon, get it. If you can’t, get a coupe.

Don’t mess with convertibles if there’s a hardtop variant available. The one exception in history to this was the Ferrari Daytona, and it won’t repeat.

Get the sunroof/moonroof, even if you’ll never use it.

If you have a choice between the raised-suspension wagon and the regular-suspension wagon, get the latter, unless you live in a self-consciously adventurous state like Oregon or Colorado.

Opt for dark interior colors in everything that isn’t a true luxury car.

And he is right... If you are stupid enough to buy a brand new car thinking of how much you can resell it in a couple years, these are the things you want to focus on for maximum resale value.

For what I know about E-class (and I suppose 5ers too), the largest engine just makes for a steeper depreciation curve.

Funny line of thought, less depreciation = making money.

There’s nothing inherently stupid in that mindset. I purchased our pilot new, because having the newest safety features in the kid hauler was important to me. Part of the decision process was cost of ownership, which includes depreciation and resale value. Minimizing depreciation is smart.

What new feature did you get in that Pilot that were worth losing thousands of dollars over a couple years? I can understand people wanting modern cars for safety and crash testing results... One can’t put a price on safety. I personally don’t care about that. So I genuinely wonder.... Other than safety, why would one buy a modern car instead of an appreciating E34 M5 for example? I think safety is really the only interest for people to buy a car and accept losing thousands in depreciation. Other than that... I really don’t get it.

Safety really is reasons 1-5. Not sure I’d buy new if not for the specific safety features we could only get on the pilot at the time. Honda Sensing is great. We drive overnight to grandpa and Nana’s house, so the system that keeps you in your lane and wakes you if you drift is amazing, and has definitely been worth the money for piece of mind. Also, we’ve had it actually do it’s job, and it works.

I’m a big believer in the small overlap crash tests and the huge improvements that have come with it. Seriously, when on Earth would I hit something perfectly flush? The results you see on the new Honda’s and Volvo’s, compared to cars just a couple years old but not designed for the test, are astounding.

So yeah, safety for the kids. Warranty is nice, but certified pre-owned can cover that.

I don’t think that was the point he was making. When I bought a used tundra, the v8 engines were worth an extra 2 grand on Craigslist. Same for 4 wheel drive, or quad cab. So if someone had gotten a 4x4 V8 for around 4 grand more than a v6, either as new (maybe not) or second owner (probably so), that money would come back to you. So you’d get the benefits with minimal long term cost.

Yep I am sure that was the point, he just worded it funny. You don’t make money, you lose less of it, or maybe vs the price of a base model, the extra features standing alone don’t depreciate, only the basis price of the vehicle. But we know the author, some material is better than others :)

I feel like he’s mostly got it, but I would pay more for a used car not to have a sunroof honestly.

“If you are stupid enough to buy a car for resale” is perfectly said. If my dream car is a Porsche cabriolet I’m not buying the hardtop. Nobody should ever buy a car for financial appreciation reasons. Buy the one you want and That makes you happy. A few grand at selling isn’t going to make up for all the times you wanted to put the top down over the years.
