Reddit’s Just Rolled into the Shop is a veritable cornucopia of the many wonders and oddities of shop lyfe. You never know what’s gonna roll in. Here’s what caught my eye this week.

Ugh, these and smallbears dashcam posts convince me that we need the subscription based autonomous revolution more than ever.

Take driving and maintenance out of the hands of normies

I don’t know if HAVs will be able to sense things like brake and tread condition. Inspections and maintenance are going to be just as (if not more) critical.

A human driver can get a feel for the road surface, braking effectiveness, and tire grip almost instantly, and adjust their driving as necessary. But for autonomous systems... well, I guess some cars do already have sensors for when the brake pads get low, but all that does is trip a warning light, right? The closest thing I’ve seen to having a system actually sense grip and adapt braking/acceleration would be the way they use wheel speed sensors for traction control and ABS. It’s more REactive , than the PROactive way in which a human driver can know when a vehicle is compromised and drive more carefully.

It worries me that those HAVs might not even have a “limp mode” to get to a shop. If there are sensors everywhere, monitoring all of the car’s systems, a fault somewhere might “brick” the car in the name of safety and keep it undriveable until the repair (even if it just needs a new TPMS sensor) is performed.

True, but it looks like we’re going to be sold cars on a subscription basis, I would guess that Volvo or GM would take care of the maintenance for us

Well, all of these technical considerations are going to affect the price of that subscription, for sure. Whether they have to keep fixing the cars, or build them to be more robust in the first place. Unless these for-profit companies can find a way to make this affordable to everyone, it’s going to be a very slow revolution.

I compose these roundups throughout the course of the week, as there’s usually at least roughly 50 or so JRitS posts per day. Sometimes the week starts off slow, without much interesting stuff to share.

But Reddit never disappoints. By the end of the week, I have to whittle down and remove some of the more mild stuff, and keep the highlights instead. You can always depend on there being serious brake and tire failures to tack on the end, too.
