It just occurred to me that most of you probably don’t know how the door locks in my alfa work.

This is the door of an S2 spider (albeit with S1 handles) and you notice that there is no lock switch on the panel or the edge of the door. That’s because the lock mechanism is part of the door handle. You pull it down to open the door and pull it up to lock it. A very simple and elegant solution that confuses passengers and new owners alike.

It never occurred to me either, just assumed they didn’t work.

“poorly”, or “not at all” would have also been acceptable

Ha I remember trying to figure out the locks in my dad’s Spitfire. Same setup, just the opposite - push down to lock, pull up to unlock/open. It actually is pretty intuitive when you figure it out.

The inner door is beautiful.

My 73 Fiat 124 spider has a similar set up. New passengers rarely figure out how to open the door, passenger side, reach over with left arm, push up on lever, push open with right arm. Push down on the same handle to lock. Lock the other door with a key after exiting. This makes it impossible to lock your keys in the car. Not that that would be problem as the latches on the wind wings (if you don’t know what a wind wing is ask your parent, possibly your grand parent) fell off probably the day after the car left the factory. In reality it’s impossible to lock the car. This is a feature that discourages people from cutting through the soft top to get in.

Interesting. Although it’s a convertible anyway so I don’t know how much a lock is really going to help anyway. It is a manual though so at least here in the states it’s basically impossible to steal.
