Inasmuch as I would probably buy a new G550 and not a G65, or even a G63. I just far prefer the way the base model looks over the AMGs. And let’s be honest, a 416hp V8 that does 60 in 5.7 seconds is plenty of speed for a shed. If and when I can afford it, there will be one of these in my garage.

Kinja'd!!!

You may drop down to the comments and commence hating on the Gelandewagen as usual. And yes, if I had one, I would refer to it exclusively as a Gelandewagen.

+1 for the Gelandewagen in any spec.

I think the G-wagon is really the only SUV I want. That or an X5M.

I like the old ones to, but as bad as a current G550 would be to DD, the old ones would be worse.

I can’t see why the new one would be anything but better. It’s the same car only with A/C, leather heated seats, a good radio, cruise control, and other things I like my DDs to have.

you could get a 460 with all those things except leather, which...meh I like cloth better.

They’re also quite slow. I do love the 460, a lot, but if I were dailying one I’d wont the posh trimmings of the new one. I’ve tried dailying a cool old school car without the modern creature comforts I’m accustomed to. It got old after a month or so.

exactly, the car goes the speed the chassis is meant to go. its not like some diabetic 12 year old dog that chomped a pack of vivrin.

I have 2 lumbing off road vehicles, one with a derth of power and one with plenty, the power is fun to have, and it makes towing nice, but it doesn’t make the car a better drive.

It reminds me of the 97 gmt400 k2500 suburban we had, it had the vortec 454 with a protec intercooler supercharger on it, headers and full exhaust. It was silly from a stop, and it pulled like a freight train but it was otherwise no better to drive than before.

I get what you’re saying, but every time I merged on the highway or trying to pass at speed in my LX I found myself wishing the damn thing would go faster. Like I said, to each their own.

I like most of Doug’s videos, but this was one of the few I couldn’t get behind. I felt like he was trying to be obtuse about the car. He did bring out good points, like the lock/unlock button location and the unacceptable cheapness of certain things in a car that costs so much money, but he piled on every little wrong thing so much that it felt disingenuous.

In fairness, apart form the quality of the basic construction and the off-road capability, it is an objectively terrible car with horrid value. It’s value lies solely in the cool factor. If, like me, you find the G cool, it’s worth every penny. If not, well, it’s a stupid, ostentations waste of money and not a great car to boot.

Some of them don’t have space for passengers in the back but technical equipment and weigh over 3 tons. Or they’re used for towing. Then it does feel rather slow. But yeah underpowered only compared to the other versions talked about here.

Considering that Mercedes will sell you a 5-ton Sprinter Van with a 95hp 2.2L Diesel and even those get out of their own way, only puts into perspective how little you actually need.

G500 with the M113 is the only way to go. Maybe a G55 because it’s basically the same thing with more power, but you don’t need it at all.

Just googled the times. 12-13 seconds to 60 is impressive for a large van being powered by a blender motor, but it’s still pretty darn slow.

*by modern day american Standards. Seriously you guys are properly spoiled. My (manual) Maxima is quoted at 11.3s, and there is no way a 509 CDI is anywhere near a sub 20s time. A 519 CDI, maybe, but that has the same engine as the G300 CDI. For reference the current G350d does it in 8.8s, and me dad’s Vito 122 CDI does it in 9.1. All of them have the same 3.0L V6 Diesel with different ECU and Turbo.

It’s true. A tiny one-point something three cylinder diesel that hits sixty in the double digits is probably the norm in most of Europe, but that wouldn’t fly here. My Land Cruiser did 60 in over 9 seconds and ran out of breath right around 100mph, and that was certainly too slow for my liking. Most of us are just accustomed to cars which at least do sub-8 seconds, and personally I like them to go much quicker than that. It’s just what I’m used to.

True. Most of the window area reflected the cabin itself... I noticed opposite-side passing vehicles being reflected on the top part of the glass. That’s better than on the lower part, where an actual car would appear hehe

Still, the amount of fun the Wrangler is more than makes up for this! Would love to own one.
