Lyft has arrived in my city (Owensboro, Kentucky). It’s a surprising development, considering how small of a town Owensboro is (50,000-ish people). Anyway, the Chamber of Commerce is putting on an informational event regarding driving for Lyft and I’ve decided to go and see what it’s all about.

I figure I could make a little extra money when I wanted to and not worry about it when I didn’t. Plus, the farthest I would have to go from my house is 10-15 miles. Like I said, small town.

Anyway, does anyone else on here drive for Lyft? Any ideas, tips, tricks, or advice?

As a frequent customer it seemed to me that it’s best to (A) have a fuel efficient car or to (B) if you don’t drive strictly during popular times / surges.

To figure out if it’s worth it or not, you need to figure out how much it costs you to run your car per mile and then figure out how much you make per mile on lyft. If cost > earnings, not worth it.

I wouldn’t do it if you care a lot about your car. I’ve taken 100's of rides between the two services and have seen other riders do things that would make me freak if it were my car. I considered it for a very short period until I began using the service and saw what some riders did.

I do it occasionally when delivery work is light. It’s not great but not horrible. Definitely doesn’t pay enough around here to be a primary source of income though. As for suggestions, you have to weigh the risks you’re willing to put your car through vs your desire to maximize money/rides. For example, the late night bar crowd is one of the most profitable times to be out, but that’s also one of the highest risks of damage to your interior.

I’ve thought about it, but it would have to be a car I don’t care about. I think I would prefer Uber Eats over carrying people, but the drivers say it doesn’t pay enough to be worth it.
