In my experience, people that run the deer whistles hit more deer. Not sure if this is because they live where deer are common enough that it’s more likely, or if it’s because they startle the deer into moving (which makes it more likely that they’ll be on the road). In any case, they probably do nothing useful and may actually be worse than nothing.

You shut up and be thankful.

Kinja'd!!!

Or something. Not hat I’d want to hit either of them, but if I had to choose...

I don’t know if deer whistles do much... but imo they’re cheap enough that you should have them anyway.

True, my mom hit three deer with deer whistles on her car. Next car she didn’t mount deer whistles and didn’t hit any deer. A sharp eye, luck and good brakes are about the only thing that helps with deer.

$6000 in body damage is my guess. I’ve had to repair a bunch of E-series vans after front end impacts.

I’ve decided that loud exhaust and tires are the best solutions to deer. I’ve spent the last five years mostly living in national parks, and have had way more encounters in work trucks with stock exhausts and highway tires than in my personal vehicles with aftermarket/broken exhaust and all-terrains.

What CalzoneGolem said, they’re a god damn plague.

Also the only way to avoid them is to keep a good eye out and have good reflexes. They’re incredibly stupid and whistles don’t do anything.

Just how many are you allowed to kill?

Are other projectiles less restrictive? Bows are super quiet haha.

This was debated on FB I believe last year, and I found a study from a university that tested 4-5 different deer whistles. The findings were that the tone they created were outside of the range deer can even hear.

Muzzle, Shotgun and Bow are limited to one per season (bow has two seasons). However these don’t count against each other. Six Day Firearm is 2 however those count against shotgun.

Not having neighbors makes those just “suggestions” though, unfortunately that’s not the case for me.

Having neighbors that like venison can make those suggestions.

That’s a valid point. Now that I think about it, having done collision repair in a part of the US with the highest rates of deer accidents in the country, I’ve never fixed a bro-dozer from a deer hit.

they’re antlered rats. probably among the dumbest animals in existence. they basically have four modes; 1) eat, 2) crap, 3) hump, and 4) RUN!!!

or a decent bull bar...

Growing up in Illinois I observed that deer whistles increased the odds of hitting a deer. It was interesting to see just how many cars that had hit a deer had a whistle on the portion which still existed.

I don’t know. My grandfather went for walks through the forest around his house everyday, and encountered the game warden on his property fairly frequently. (Nearest neighbor was about 1/4 mile away)
