Cheap Volvo, school me.
Quick stoplight snap of my wife driving the ST while I suffer dailying the Disco. (Exterior plastic trim disintegration intensifies) I still love the aggressive tone that the Ray’s set on the car especially with the slightly larger than stock sized Continental DWS06. Still needs tint and an intercooler installed. (Parts sitting in my office for over a year now). If I don’t get a floor jack this year for Christmas after having asked for it for the last 4 years I will have a coronary.

The front seats are super comfy.
The back seat is laughably small for a sedan of its size.
The seller thinks it has a 2.5 liter 8 cylinder motor.
You will spend a not-insignificant amount of money and time on repairs.

Those are Ray’s 57Extremes 18x8 33mm offset with no suspension work. I would like coilovers but I like the higher ride height for that rally attack look and also more functional, imho.

I test drove a similar one a few years ago and the smell of fuel in the interior when I did a mildly hard stop was alarming in every sense of the word. The automatic lived up to the name “slushbox” and nothing wanted to work.
Of course, the seller demanded at least like 4k and “knew what he had”.
Be careful....

I just got an 07 SR. You dont really want an 04, and you really dont want the automatics. The SRs have whats called an angle gear, its basically a transfer case to run the rear wheels for the AWD system. There is a metal sleeve between the gears and the driveshaft, they are known to fail pretty easily on the 04. They are fairly cheap to purchase, and a bit of a pain to replace.
From my research there is all sorts of issues with the automatics. From the computer messing up, to part failures.

It’s bad enough when a private seller doesn’t know how many cylinders their car has, but a dealership really should be checking that kind of stuff before they make a listing. I can see the manager now saying, “it’s that fast it must have a V8.”

The angle gear collar is an issue on all R years. It’s actually LESS likely to fail on an auto 04/05 due to the torque limiting in 1st and 2nd gear.
The automatics got better and worse for 06/07. They got an extra gear, more power capacity, but suffered from valve body issues. Each one has it’s issues but programming isn’t typically one of them. At this point in time it’s been 10 years since the last R came out. All of them should have necessary software updates by now.

It can be a DD if you want it to be. You just have to be prepared.
I dunno why but these cars have a reputation on OPPO like they’re somehow the same as a B5 All Road or S4. They aren’t nearly that bad. Shit ain’t cheap though. That’s a consideration for any car that was expensive to begin with. Someone paid 45,000 for my VR in 04. It’s the equivalent to spending 60+ for a new Polestar today. You can’t go into a car like that and either expect to not spend money, or expect to spend pennies at AutoZone.
It has a super complicated suspension and struts are 300 plus, each.
It has 13" vented rotors with 4 pot Brembos all around. It’s gonna cost more to do brakes.
It’s the reality of the situation and SRs hardly command any money at this point. It gets people into trouble. Cheap car doesn’t mean cheap running costs. It’s not a Corolla.
