Kinja'd!!!

I scored the plate of my dreams.

It wasn’t long before they were bolted on the car, and I was just itching to put some miles on them.

It had been a rough week, hell - it’s been a rough couple of months. I started the car and just drove.

It was one of those perfect, sunny evenings, cruising down by the beach. As always, there was a parade of sweet metal up and down the boulevard. I liked to think I was contributing to the beauty on show.

It’s a stunning way to clear your mind, this I can vouch for. I can’t wait to do it again.

It does, a bit! Few hundred miles away, though.

That’s a beautiful 740! Don’t see many in that color!

Also love the plates!

Thanks! I initially wanted silver or white but the blue has really begun to grow on me.

Over the next few years I really want to just keep driving it and freshen it up a bit.

One thing I can’t quite get my head around though is how to restore 80s/90s interior plastics. New parts just don’t exist, so what do you do?

I feel like the US and Australia are some of the few countries where it’s easy to get a custom plate.

Nice plates, even nicer car, but I would have gone for:

DöP 740

It is super easy here.

This one is actually not “really” a custom plate, which is why it was so cheap.

So in South Australia, our standard plates used to be 3 letters, then 3 numbers. R and S series plates were from the late 60s to late 70s I believe.

Because so many of those cars are off the road now, and people like to keep their old plates for a restoration, you can apply for any R or S series plate you want for less than $100, and unlike other custom plates, you don’t need to pay a yearly fee to keep them.

I normally wouldn’t be able to justify the cost of a custom plate, but $100 one-off is too good to say no to.

Haha, what does that mean?

I was limited to starting with R or S, 3 letters, and 3 numbers. So it was really this or SAD 740 which wasn’t as fun. :P

For this plate:

I paid the state of GA a $70 fee to make the plate, but should only be $20 a year afterwards.

For this plate:

I paid the state of Texas something like $215 a year. I was making oil money at the time so I didn’t really mind.

In the literal translation sense it wouldn’t mean much at all, but I would think “Dope 740" if I were to see it. :)

Texas sounds about lineball with where I’m at for truly custom plates.

Georgia is hella cheap.
