Because it is important that I know lest another division in human society be wallpapered over like what’s happening between manual and automatic transmissions. Or is this the essential compromise?

Some early cars were backseat driven (with levers). I can’t see how that couldn’t work if the controls are rarely needed.

Is your living room LHD or RHD?

Once cars are fully autonomous, removing the steering wheel and pedals, the only controls will be for entertainment and convenience features (and probably an emergency stop). There will be no need for such controls to favor one side or the other.
