!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Was talking about representations of ethics in fiction, and how most stories do a pretty pathetic job weighing a villains motivations against the protagonist’s. Then I remembered The Third Man, and thought about how well it still stands up.

Also, has some great vehicles in it.

Absolutely agree with the ‘poor weighting of villain’s motives’ thing.

I do a smidge of geeky fiction writing myself and the abiding golden rule I have for characters is ‘no-one is the villain of their own story’.

Not strictly true in real life as a number of serial killers for instance know that they are evil people, but by far the vast majority of bad stuff in the world is done by people who genuinely believe they’re doing the right thing.

The best stories I find are when there’s a definite possibility that what the villain velieves is right...actually might be...
