My guess is some one thought they would be a good investment. In this case, depending on when they were purchased, he might have been right.
The “investor” is most likely recently deceased. The real problem when people have stuff like this they always think. “Why sell now, they’ll be worth more next year.”

that, and when you want to put together a very nice example, it can be easier/cheaper to get an entire car of spares and different options... that guy probably had two others outside of that garage at his home that were pristine drivers.... its also nice, that when you have a car you truly love, to have spare parts to put the car back together should some misfortune find it.....
