Any Oppo do CrossFit? The boxes around my area are priced way too high, but I’m thinking about putting a setup in my garage to start doing some WOD’s (or variation of...)

What does your fitness routine look like Oppo?

If you have no experience with large compound exercises I would not jump into it without instruction.

You can create a good garage gym with a power rack, bench, rubber mats, and two 300lb weight sets.

I am currently a few cycles into 531. Works with my schedule and recovery times are decent. It’s an intermediate program though.

Did it for a while, was good for me, but just hard to find the time to get away to do it with family responsibilities. I did tweak my knee at one point - no permanent damage, thankfully.

My current fitness routine is coaching my kid’s basketball team and taking my dogs for short hikes (love long hikes, but once again, time). Need to do more - hoping to get in a routine with my oldest son soon.

Honestly, you can do a ton with just a kettlebell + bodyweight exercises.

I work out at home using various home workout routines (insanity, p90x, etc) that I found on the internet borrowed from a friend.

Most are pretty low on equipment requirements. I have two sets of adjustable dumbbells ($40 each), a few medicine balls, and a pull-up bar. Total investment is <$150.

Personally, it’s a much better situation than a gym membership. Don’t need to drive to a gym and deal with other gym-people in the process. I’m in and out in less than an hour a day. I’d highly recommend it.

Don’t become a cross fit person... They’re like vegans. Do you know how you know someone is vegan? they will tell you. Do you know how someone does cross fit? They’ll tell you they do cross fit before they tell you they’re vegan.

True, but it depends on what his goals are.

Bulk up? Be less fat? Be strong? Endurance? Deficiencies in physique? Fight health issues? Etc.

Theres too much doubt for me about the harm that crossfit can cause if done incorrectly. Yeah any exercise can do that but its especially risky with stuff like crossfit. But either way, I would like to get back into weight training, my scrawny self could use some of that and I find I sleep better and get more energy by working out. Currently I do PLENTY of cardio between soccer, ultimate frisbee, and hiking but that doesnt do a whole lot for chest/back that I would like to lift for. The struggle is just eating enough food to actually gain weight. I have to eat like 4000 calories a day and make sure to balance it properly in order to gain anything and that just feels uncomfortable to intake that much.

But ski season is almost upon me so that at least provides a full body workout with 30+ days over the season. Either way, that just means I should be able to skip leg day but still do at least chest, back, and core days. 2-3 days a week is a good start along with protein shakes.

For sure. Personally, I’m not looking to add too much more muscle (6'1", 225) - more about getting trimmer, building endurance/strength, and just for basic health (will be 40 soon).

If objective is getting bigger/stronger, heavy weights are clearly necessary.

With my (and my wife) recently switching to almost-veganism, we try really hard to not bring it up because of that very stereotype. But inevitably, sometimes it comes up.

This weekend we went to a surprise bday party for one of her friends. We hadn’t told this couple yet about our change in diet. This thing was kinda planned on the fly and we didn’t have too many details on how it was going down, so we figured we’d hang for a while then proceed with the rest of our day. There was no indication it was going to be some huge food shindig and we’d need to make a point of mentioning the new diet.

So we get there, and the husband’s sister and mom are taking the food serious, plus there were other dishes brought by other people, and catering from a Venezuelan restaurant. The food there was 2 kinds of shredded meat plus meat empanadas from the Venezuelan place, cheesy bacon-y potatoes, pulled pork, and this lamb & rice dish from Uzbekistan.

The only stuff we could eat was salad, raw veggies, chips, and that stupid awful midwestern creation of veggie “pizza” consisting of crescent roll dough rolled flat, baked, then topped with cream cheese and veggies, served cold.

The bday girl asked if we got a chance to try all the different food, and we had to sheepishly say, “well, we went vegetarian recently.” She was supportive and said she was sorta secretly vegetarian and doesn’t like things like lamb and veal.

Her husband came over and asked me about the rotisserie chicken restaurant I had talked about wanting to open at some point, and so we had to tell him why that’s not happening anymore. Then he was all like, “uhh so do you have to take a bunch of supplements to get your amino acids and stuff?” I told him I already take that kind of stuff for my workouts so didn’t need to add anything.

The husband’s sister who had organized the food asked us if we had eaten stuff, asked if we wanted leftovers because there was so much extra food, and we had to tell her. She got all apologetic like, “oh, he just told me who he had invited, I didn’t know anyone had dietary restrictions. ” I told her it was no big deal, he didn’t know because it was a recent change for us. Then she was like, “you have to eat ALL THE EXTRA DESSERTS, WE HAVE SO MUCH EXTRA FOOD YOU GUYS.”

But we didn’t want to stuff ourselves with desserts when we hadn’t eaten a proper meal so we hung out for a while and ended up at a brewpub place where they’ll do any of their burgers with a black bean patty.

And I swear, this happened even though we were just trying to be good party guests and not make a big deal about the food.

I’ve been doing crossfit for about 1.5 years. I had zero weight lifting experience coming from an endurance running background. The gym I found has a great coaching staff that focus on correct form over weight or times. This was perfect for me because I can now confidently do most of the core lifts without risk of injury. This knowledge is worth the price of my membership. I normally go to the gym 2-4 times a week and run 2-4 times a week (I double Saturday sometimes).

If you have solid barbell experience, you could build a decent garage gym for the price 1 year of membership fees. Buy used when possible.

If you have an oly platform, bar, bench, and squat rack, you should be set. I would also add a kettlebell or two as well. For cardio, add in running, and quick body-weight movements. You can find tons of WOD’s online with minimal searching. Find what movements work for you and program them in.

If you need barbell experience, pay for a good gym or a trainer. Your health is worth the cost.

Hahaha I say it in jest but thank you for being a “cool” vegan. It’s the ones that bring it up for no reason that everyone hates on. One of my best friends is vegetarian(Indian family who never ate meats) and yu only time it comes up is when we’re planning on making food for him.

In addition to being depressing, this item is neither vegan nor better for you than eating meat.

I second this: a set of adjustable dumbbells, an adjustable bench, and a pair of running shoes will pretty much get you there.

We’re not 100% dairy or egg free. Generally we try to only eat dairy and eggs from sources where there’s some kind of specific information about them treating the animals nicely. Like I eat a bunch of protein bars but I ditched whey protein because it’s hard to know the supply of milk for that, so I get vegan protein bars instead.

On occasion I’ll make an exception. In this case, the husband told us to get there at 3 pm, and my wife was all like, “IT’S A SURPRISE PARTY, WE HAVE TO BE ON TIME!” I had just enough time to get my workout in and get shaved and showered, and we didn’t really plan ahead with eating in advance of this thing. So I was starving. I ate a couple pieces of that not-pizza. But seriously, fuck that not-pizza.

Kinja'd!!!

(And of course the husband had sandbagged the shit out of that 3 pm time because he got there at like 3:35 and a bunch of other people showed up after them. )

This looks like somebody attacked a crudité platter with a meat cleaver and then dumped it on the blandest possible dough base in order to make it simultaneously worse tasting, unhealthier, and messier to eat. Crudité platters are fine and good party appetizers, and Midwestern church potluck food is the worst cuisine on the planet.

In my specific instance the cream cheese had been mixed with a packet of ranch dressing mix, and the vegetables were broccoli and diced bell peppers. At least there weren’t any radishes. But yes, it is a sad, horrible excuse for a food item.

Now that I drive a Subaru, I should start doing crossfit and become a vegan. That would be like the perfect trifecta since of course owning a WRX STi means I have the best car. BROOOOOOOOO I also need a vape pen!

That was my biggest reservation too. Until I drove one, then I was just like NAHH fuck it I dont care! Although these are wayyyy too quiet in stock form so I may have to put a ricer exhaust on there and end up being “one of those”. But thanks to california emissions, I will just be doing a simple axleback.

Getting a routine with your son will be great for the both of you. I started working out in high school, and since then it’s just been a habit of mine. My young cousin recently asked me to take him to the gym and it’s helped me focus a lot on improving my form, rather than just going up in weight on my exercises. Focusing and making sure he does everything correctly so he doesn’t hurt himself has helped me focus more on that myself. Sometimes after a while of working out you get so caught up in the numbers that you lose focus on the “being healthy” part of it lol.

I powerlift, so my routine changes based on the type of program I’m doing and if I’m peaking for a meet. My cardio is more “crossfit” style though. Some sort of circuit mixing weightlifting and cardio based workouts.

Been mucking around the gym for 12+ years, into sports in school. I have been doing Crossfit for 5 years now. Started it with a free-trial rather skeptical and it kicked my ass with the constant variation. Never been in better shape and I still do static lifting, jogs, etc. from time to time. It surprised me with its ability to consistently humble me and teach me new things.

Find a good spot with a strong core of members and coaches who are in-touch with your goals. Crossfit has a polarizing reputation but it really varies from gym to gym and person to person. My gym offers lots of extra space and equipment where you can do your own things outside of classes - a big selling point for me.

I do powerlifting. I see my lifting coach once a month. I highly recommend that whatever you do, make sure you get proper instructions so you have the movements down. It’s been super beneficial for me. For working out at home I would say get good equipment and take care of it.
