Kinja'd!!!

My wife is interested in getting into what she says is calligraphy, but I don’t know where to start, any of the artists here do hand lettering or calligraphy? What would you suggest as a good place to start?

She mentioned brushes, but I don’t think she is interested in Characters or sumi, I suspect she is mostly into hand lettering for decoration and such (as shown above).

I find pen sets online but she mentioned brushes. Any thoughts?

Any calligraphy I had done was using pens, like the old timey ink pens. They also make some more conventional pens with ink cartridges, but I had better luck with the dip type pens. But not brushes, pens with different width tips.

My wife does a lot of hand lettering for decorative signs with paint markers, but I have no idea if that’s common or not. She taught herself before I met her, but she is pretty good at it! We tend to buy old canvases at garage sales, etc and she paints over them.

I’d suggest getting a Lamy Safari for a check but excellent fountain pen. Unless she wants to get into Persian/Arabic calligraphy, I can’t help though.

I dabbled in grad school so I could make cards and invitations. I went to an art store and got a kit like this  of pens to start learning. Expensive pens can come later.

I mean, some of the pens are very brush-like...

My wife also does calligraphy. She’s dang picky about both the pens and the paper she writes on. I gave up trying to pick something for her. I guess it’s like any hobby, there’s enough depth to bury you if you let it.

Here’s a quick primer: https://www.jetpens.com/blog/calligraphy-pen-basics/pt/689

Can’t hurt to get her a couple pens and a brush and see what she prefers, I guess.

I took calligraphy in high school. Loved it. Lots of projects that incorporated art (which I can’t do but had fun nonetheless). Materials aren’t cheap but a hobby is a hobby.

I used pens, never brushes. Easy to control, more crisp. Much more methodical than artistic, which is probably why I was drawn (DO-HO!) to it.

She’s into a hobby kick right now, and Im okay with that cause her “expensive” hobbies are my cheapest ones.

I agree. When someone you care about gets excited about a new endeavor, the only right move is to encourage them and facilitate their start-up.

Agreeing with the starter pen kit. My wife picked one up a while back, they are a great way to start.

My mom took a class from the local community college years ago. The one here does a lot of 6 week or so classes like that. She did years of names in Bibles and confirmation and baptism certificates for our church. Sometimes she does the Christmas card envelopes if she’s bored. She has a pen with multiple tips and then ink cartridges. I think it’s pretty entry level but gets the job done.

I tried it for fun in high school. My normal handwriting is pretty terrible so my caligraphy wasn’t great either. I don’t have the patience.

In my experience, caligraphy leads to more painful hobbies...

Good point. Open ink wells and kids don’t mix the way you’d want them to.
