But I think this is the final nail in the coffin.

Kinja'd!!!

The PO managed to even curve the nail head on the other. I got’em both out now and just need to figure out a way to get a C clamp in there to press in the new bushings.

It’s like life is a video game and was like. “Ya know, this guys gotten a lot better a wrenching. Time to bump up the difficulty.”

Update: The bushings didn’t fix anything. Well it does shift nicer now, but still no fifth. Also cleaned up the rods near the shifter (two rods slide in and out of two sleeves) and that didn’t let it go into fifth either.

Another day I’ll take a closer look at the shifting mechanism itself and see if it’s that. Although at this point I think it’s an internal transmission issue. Since the bushings near the shifter look perfectly fine.

Remind me again why you decided to buy a $900 Accord again.

What am I looking at here? Because it looks wrong.

2 saves monies. Although in fairness the 2k options I was looking at weren’t exactly problem free. At least this has cheap parts and is fairly easy to work on.

The shifter cable bushing on the transmission side. It’s just suppose to be a regular cotter pin there. Also the washer looks to small. The replacements are poly urethane, so idk if they need the washer or not.

When you’ve had a few too many to drive to the parts store...

That’s fair enough. We also have different ideas of cheap cars.

Don’t knock using nails. I have nails acting as hinge pins on my fuel door.

I drove a truck for months that had the ball joint held in with a bent nail and no bolt.

Didn’t like pulling trailers though. Front end would get light and the tire would start to get all squirrel.

But this isn’t load bearing like that. It’s just overkill for this application.

You’ll want washers with the poly bushings. On a shifter, those might be small and soft enough to tap out with a socket and a mallet.

For these specifically I don’t think so now. Apparently they’re just held in with a C-clip and cotter pin. ¯\_()_/¯

Honda: The official car of shade tree mechanics! Think about it. 80% of the time you see someone working on a car on the side of the road or in a parking lot, it’s a old Honda.

On my Civic (98, $1100), the front lower ball joint castle nuts were held on by twist ties. As in the little wire and paper things that keep your bread bag closed. I found this out after one of said nuts went AWOL, leaving me stranded in the middle of a delivery.

Hang tough, buddy.

Four years ago I bought a Tercel for 1200 and spent well over 2 grand trying to make it road worthy and it was still a total piece of shit. Sold it for 800.

Touché. Although, I can’t be the only person that’s done that.

But the Tercel was actually rad when it ran. This is just a POS even when running. The good new is, it’ll do 60mph at 3k rpm in 4th gear. I don’t plan on driving it further from San Antonio to Houston. So it really shouldn’t be to much of an issue.

Unless the rest of the trans shits out O_O

Even then. That would just be a couple hundred dollars and a wasted weekend.

I can assure you this was NOT rad when it ran —this was the previous Tercel, not the blue one you know.
