It’s not the aircraft thing, that was debunked a while back, it’s something to do with showing the colors of the Free State of Bavaria.

I always believed it was the aircraft propeller, but Google’s first page result seems it’s up for some debate.

BMW corporate maintains its for the Bavarian flag.
The spinning propeller thing just comes from a series of advertisements they ran in the late ‘20s/early ‘30s.

Its from the Bavarian flag. The propeller angle was a happy little coincidence for them. Incidnetly I’m sure we have Finding Forester for adding to the confusion.
