Ah good old Davesfarm. Too bad he turned out to be a big perv with self control issues, the content was often pretty amusing, he was the cold start pioneer.

That’s way more than I know about the guy. If I owned that old school bus, I wouldn’t feel any need to destroy it.

In other news, I drove Rusty five miles yesterday to a friend’s business to park it for the holidays. I was under a time constraint, or I would have mounted the GoPro and captured the event. I’ll to that when I drive it home. I could register Rusty immediately and begin driving it around, but the electrical system is disconnected and an unknown and no brake lights. Once I have that sorted, I’ll make it legal and get it on the road. The three-on-the-tree is nostalgic.

There’s a bit of drama out there surrounding him and his exploits. I think he bought the bus for like $600 at a surplus auction, and figured it was so cheap, he would have fun with it. I would have tried to resell it at a profit.

Will you need an inspection to have the fan registered? Will you get year of manufacture plates? I suppose the van is from right around the time when black plates switched to blue plates. I am sure any work it needs should be relatively simple. Does it have power assists? When I was younger, my dad had a few old cars, and one had a 3 on the tree with manual steering and brakes. I didn’t enjoy driving it, but my dad loved it.

The original plates are on it. No power assisted anything. I have the brackets and parts for power steering and I aim to find vacuum-boosted brakes. And eventually, air conditioning.

I’d have sold that bus at a profit or else fixed it up as an RV. I drove a school bus in Virginia at age 17.

Was it continuously registered the whole time? I’ve heard Californians are into that kind of thing. Adding power assists would be easy, not sure about the AC, but all are nice to live with. My old car lacks AC, but most of the year in this part of the world, it isn’t needed.

Never drove a bus, but I have to imagine $600 is a deal. Maybe you should stalk some surplus auctions and find a friend for the van :)

I do not know about registration continuity. That it has the original plates is continuity enough for me. I am also curious to see where installing an A/C might take me. I know they offered A/C on the Rally Wagon, which was the family wagon version of the Vandura. My van is essentially a base model version of the Rally Wagon. But those vehicles probably all had V8 engines, so my A/C will require lots of custom bits up front.

I came rather close to buying a Bluebird Mini Bird a few years back that wound up selling at auction for $995. That’s a G30 Step Van chassis. While I would love to fix up something like that as an RV, Rusty makes much more sense.

Yeah, I think the I6 will feel the drag of a compressor, not to mention the weight of the other stuff. Great engine for smooth operation and a special exhaust sound, but not the most powerful unit in the world.

I can’t imagine doing a motorhome conversion - so much work. I live in an area where space is at a premium both in availability and cost, and storing an old vehicle outside would eventually ruin it unless you wanted extreme patina. It’ll likely be only one old car for me.

It’s going to get a 5-speed, which will help some. And perhaps a cam later.

Yes, I could think of Rusty as Patinamobile.

5-speed from what? 5 on the tree? :)

In my area, even though the roads generally don’t receive salt, I think Rusty would last a couple winters outside before the rust passed the point of no return. Constant damp can be troublesome.

It may even suffer at my home, not far from the Bay. We’ll see. My brother-in-law lives on the coast up north and some things have literally exploded with rust.

I just got this pamphlet in the mail from Ebay:

I’ve heard in CA, you are fine inland, but the coast can be troublesome, especially for bubbly surface rust. Similar to what we get up here in the PNW from the rain, but it can take eons to set in.

Nice brochure, I see it is dated 8/71. As it was made for so long, it amazes me those are so old.

I’m trying to decide what to do about wheels for it. Did you and I discuss this? I’m not wild about dog dishes and I particularly don’t like the chrome-on-white that’s shown in the catalog.

Yep we discussed this. I’d go with the painted hubcaps or rally wheels, but that’s just my preference.

Maybe repaint the existing dog dishes Medium Blue and re brush the red GMC in the middle and fresh GM white paint on the rims. I think Rally wheels are too fancy for the look I’m after.

Yeah, if you are embracing the basic nature of the van, Rallys would be a bit flashy. I think the painted small hubcaps go right along with it, white wheels for sure - I think white wheels are a good look for that. This will also likely be the cheapest solution. Correct and economical, hard to beat that.

I’ll go the distance and get some GM Medium Blue. That’ll be custom, but not as tacky as the chrome dishes.

I could also see going with something like this. Period correct and using a car rim would be a much lesser offense than using a Chevy Truck rim.

I think these are the ones:

https://sfbay.craigslist.org/scz/wto/d/chevy-rally-wheels-15x7-no/6417010927.html

They are an FW code early 70's Monte Carlo wheel. 5x4.75 with 4.25 back spacing. The front tires are 205/60/15 and rears are 225/60/15. They are only good for rollers. They came on my 69 camaro project.

Those are the wheels for the hubcaps?

Kinja'd!!! "fintail" (fintail)
12/08/2017 at 14:25, STARS: 0

Those are nice, yes, and as you say, period correct. I call those Magnum 500 wheels, although they aren’t exactly the same. It would be inoffensive for sure.

I have a difficult time getting past dog dishes; I think they are just plain ugly. I don’t think I’ll have any trouble getting the $150 back out of the other wheels as they all have rubber on them for rollers.

I could add trim rings to the Monte Carlo rims, a look I’ve always liked, and a discrete center cap of some sort.

But those S-10 rims really are awful.

I don’t mind the painted hubcaps, as I know they are correct. Really, pick what you like most, it’s your vehicle, your money, and you have to look at it :)

There were stainless/chrome style hubcaps similar to the painted style:
