In this case, the only thing he forged is a legacy of burning peoples’ homes to the ground.

Wow, that’s almost impressively dumb. I feel terrible for the families that lost everything.

“He’s a father of two,” Christopher Ritchey, an Albany County public defender who is representing Mr. Gomes, said in an interview on Saturday. “He’s a hard-working plumber. And this is just a terrible, unfortunate accident, but it’s not a crime.”

1) it’s nice to see a public defender have the time and means to actually do their job when most treat their clients indifferently.

2) C’mon buddy, it’s a crime and your client needs to go to jail.

I saw this show for the first time during Thanksgiving and I can totally understand how it could inspire someone to take on bladesmithing, there’s some incredible work put out on that show. At the same time though, there were more than enough incidents and close calls just in the three or four episodes I saw that even an idiot should realize the dangers and not to be dumb about it. I feel for everyone affected by this foolishness.

Playing with fire. I can remember playing with some matches once when I was a kid and things got a little bit hot, but fortunately, didn’t get away.

We see all of this stuff on YouTube with forges and other hot things and not a fire extinguisher in sight.

In other news: I drove Rusty five miles yesterday over to a friend’s business to park it for the holidays. With the engine cover off and no air cleaner, it’s very loud inside. But it ran well and the column shifter shifted well — I’d disassembled it and cleaned it and lubed it — and stayed cool. I have a five-speed for it, but the three-on-the-tree is fun and nostalgic to drive. I’ll mount the GoPro when I drive it back home. I wanted to do that yesterday but we were in a crunch for time. My wife followed me in the Safari.

I enjoy that show, and know how to run a forge. Unless you’re in a purpose built work space, that’s an outdoor activity.

That’s fantastic! I’ve never driven a three on the tree.

I’ve not seen the show, but I’ve watched plenty of people using propane to melt and cast aluminum and I’d like to take that up for myself at some point. And in none of the YouTube stuff I’ve seen has a fire extinguisher been anywhere in sight.

And maybe have the garden hose nearby in case things get out of hand.

Definitely a nostalgic thing. I could register Rusty right now; it’s plenty driveable, but at present, there’s no electrical system happening and thus, no brake lights. Once I get it to where I know it’s charging and the lights work, I’ll register it.

One of the participants used to work in my shop! Then he got all fancy building a cannon for the king of Sweden and ended up on TV.

Good question. Can’t imagine doing that without a means to extinguish the fire if needed.

Besides, he would need to quench when complete anyways to harden.

The guy in the story qualifies the arson charge and there are different degrees, like negligent homicide is to murder. The guy didn’t set out to burn anybody’s house down intentionally. In my mind, a crime includes intent, which was absent here.

Youtube stuff of the show, or in general? The show has fire personnel behind the cameras, as well as paramedics and a fully stocked ambulance waiting outside. Based on the times I saw them intervene it seems like the medics are very alert during the filming and will immediately call a halt to check on a competitor, even when said competitor is trying to downplay/hide an injury.
