Oppo - I need some input. I’m finally getting around to redoing my house’s floors (living room / dining room / hall / office) and am going to be putting in hardwood. My indecisive nature is making this very difficult.

Kinja'd!!!

I had been set on a dark floor (have you seen a really dark stained Brazilian cherry? Oh baby) but as the time to decide draws nearer, I’m starting to thing something middle-ground or lighter might be better. It is not a big house (figure 10x12 for the office; living room is 14x16), and the doors / windows / trim are all very dark wood which I like and do not intend to change. The living room has an ugly fake stone fireplace which I’m going to redo in brick veneer (which I’m also having trouble sourcing).

What do you think? Maybe a maple or lighter cherry? I don’t like oak and big grain / knotty wood. I’ll also be repainting so show me some pictures. It doesn’t have to match my furniture because I have put off buying much anything until I finished the floors/walls.

Oooo black walnut! Tigerwood! Just saying that makes me feel like a badass.

I like the tigerwood, but do know it will be the focal point of any room due to its pizzazz.

One of the light ones on the top right; the maple colors.

Seconded. I think it would make the rooms feel more open.

Keep in mind a lot of the exotic ones need humidity..

We went engineered hardwood-when we did the floors ten years ago.

I also remember bringing home samples for a month before we decided..

Maple, hickory, oak, in that order would be my pics. In each wood there are a variety of finishes from darkly stained to natural and light colored. I did my house in hickory this summer and I love the medium color tones and variety of patterns in the wood grain.

This floor is probably going to cost me more than any of my cars did and would be a lot harder to re-sell if I don’t like it :)

They look nice but are too busy for me. When I step into the room I don’t want my eyes drawn to the floor

It is very cool, but pretty busy - like you said it would be the focus of the room, which I’m trying to avoid (I like things simple and clean).

Pictures of the house/rooms would be helpful. Personally I’m a fan of lighter stains or even natural finishes. Light flooring opens up the spaces and has the bonus of hiding dust compared to a dark floor.

If it were my home, it’d be the Brazilian walnut.

I helped my dad do maple in his house, it looks really good. Finished with a satin oil (I forget the name) coating. Syn-Tek or something. In any case it looks really good. Maybe I’ll take a similar route (though I’m going for pre-finished; I can install it but really really do not like finishing floors)

IMO light colored floors start to look cheap as they age. I’d go with Brazilian cherry since you want to keep it lightish.

(Not white oak or ash)

Looks like just about any other ranch build in the late 70's and last updated in the early 90's :)

Yes, there’s pink/salmon carpet in the living room, light green in the office, and blue in the bedroom.

I’ll try to get some pictures tomorrow when there’s a bit more light.

No idea if this helps, but here’s some pics from when I had my floors done. It’s “vintage” white oak from 1940, being redone for the first time. Pics got out of order, but you can see sanded, stain tests, stained, wet clear coat and then dry. I went with a stain called Honey.

Oak doesn’t age. Others seem to go in and out of fashion every few years.

I’m in love with my Pine floors. They’re abused but still look great.

I’d go “Natural/Rustic Oak”.

If you’re thinking modern minimalistic furniture tiger wood or black walnut so it can serve as a main focus. Rustic oak or Australian cypress (maybe teak) if you want more classic intricate larger furniture pieces

Depending on how much you want to invest in your home (and local sources), here’s what I do. I source unfinished hardwood from a local mill. Install it, then have it professionally sanded and stained. That floor will last the life of your house. One of the biggest benefits of sourcing from a mill is your boards are much longer. I specd mine to be 7-8' long. It makes a huge difference in the look of the floors. Plus the board seams are flush...no v-groove between each board.

Cost wise, the mill charged me $4/sq ft for the material. I installed it, and finishing was another $4/sq ft.

I would skip hardwood, and choose a porcelain tile that looks like wood. It will last forever, and never need to be refinished.

My german shepherd and son have caused 2 houses of mine to need the floors refinished from scratches.

This is a nice porcelain tile.

Yeah, I hate those short pieces that come mixed in with prefinished hardwood floors. My parents had their first floor done in oak, and the guy that did it used all those little pieces, really don’t like the way it looks. If you’re going the prefinished route, the first thing to do really needs to be to go through all the boxes and pick out all the small pieces and get them out of there.

If I redo the bathroom (which is the most-recently updated room so it isn’t likely any time soon) I’m going to do the electric radiant heat thing. Such luxury!
