My Jeep keeps making this weird, sort of metal on metal grinding noise after being on the highway (towing) for a while. I can’t tell which wheel it is because as soon as it cools down, it stops making it, I suspect is the front brake, but it doesn’t pull one way or another, so it’d be weird if it was caliper on disc.

What is it?

I just got off the highway again (now settled down by a family member’s house) I can confirm that:

discs have just been rectified

I think the braking system was bled too (but its they normally don’t have best practices in mind and only do the barebones jobs)

Wheels were just aligned and balanced as well.

The entire front suspension was changed and so were the wheel bearings.

The problem is not reproducible in shop conditions (it only happens after sitting in a quite steep highway for 40-50 minutes)

At speed (talking 100km/h) it sits nicely and stable, no wobble or vibration on braking.

Is there a vibration? Do you feel it in the steering wheel (problem in the front wheels), or feel it in the seat (problem in rear wheels)?

No virbation, just the sort of grinding sound, but, I’ll try to listen to it once I get back on the highway.

The wheels used to stutter under heavy braking but the suspension was changed (bushings too) and it was fixed. It also has a new engine mount.

can you hear it even when driving slow?

This is while the vehicle is moving, correct? And it’s related to vehicle speed, not engine speed?

Check the brake shroud. I had a rock stuck in it. It didn’t pull but it made me think the wheel bearing was crapped

Will do.

I can only notice it correctly when driving slowly after driving on the highway for a while (think stopping for gas) it is not related to RPM that I’d know. Its mostly present during turning and its frequency does increase with vehicle speed

Mostly when driving slowly, when maneuvering.

It was on the Toluca-Mexico highway (which is steep downwards) I pulled over in Santa Fe for fuel and I could hear the grinding noise as I parked by the pumps.

Update: no vibration.

I liked the wheel bearing guess, but I saw you say that it was replaced already. Eh, give that wheel a wiggle and check it anyway (just ask shop-teacher why...).

If it’s not loose, go ahead and continue with pulling the wheel off and inspect everything there: the brake dust shield, the inner wheel liner, anything that could be coming into contact with the rotating parts. If your grinding sounded like metal-on-metal, look for evidence of wear.

I will once it cools down in a while.

Have you checked the brake dust shields?

It’s RWD right? So maybe the u-joints/driveshaft?

It is RWD. But the noise only comes from the left side.

I’ll try to check it out though, what should I look for?

I will, its just that the car just got off the highway and I need it to cool down before getting near it.

I forget, but I think it’s coming from there or the rear. Usually if it’s coming from the front it’s easy to tell.
