I have to do my US taxes soon. I worked in California on a J1 visa this summer. I am a Croatian citizen, but thanks to the work visa I have a US social security number and have the right to a tax refund for healthcare and stuff. Does anyone have experience with that?

Contact your U.S. employer in January and ask for your W2 form. They’ll either mail it to you or give you a contact number that you can get it from. The form is an official recap of all your income for the year as well as the taxes you paid. You need it to even start applying for your tax return.

Oh, I see, some of the instructions I found skipped the January info. Thanks! Do you think it’s worth it to pay someone official to do it for me, or do you guys usually do it by yourselves?

I don’t know how the process works when claiming taxes from outside the coutry, so I can’t help you there.
