I learned a lot about old plates, like pickups get commercial plates and several years are 1951 plates with little tags to cover it up. I found a plate dealer on Ebay and he restores rusty plates and checks the DMV to verify they are good for year of manufacture plates. In CA they are basically vanity plates with a YOM application 352. There are lots of variations and rules depending on the year. I had no idea I needed commercial plates.

Then, apparently:

“When you leave the DMV you will have your YOM tags and a window sticker to show temporary registration. The DMV will keep your previously registered plates and, in my case, the pink slip. You are not allowed to mount the YOM tags on the car until you get a metal adaptor plate and current registration stickers in the mail from the main DMV office in Sacramento. I left the DMV feeling I’d never see my title again and wondering if all the forms had been filled out properly.

Once processed, you will get a metal piece to bolt on to the rear license plate. This metal piece is for the registration stickers that are in current use to show the vehicle is properly licensed. In my case processing took just a little under three weeks.

And I did get my pink slip back.

By the way, the bicycle reflector attached to the license tag is to comply with section 24607 of the California Vehicle Code.”

I’m not sure what adaptors the DMV will give me, I see these metal tag things for sale.

Interesting that the registration sticker tab is included in the vehicle registration processing in California - in Ontario, we’d have to buy or fabricate tabs on our own.

I found some to buy, but I’m waiting to see if this is true and what they look like. I can’t find an official picture.

Bloody he’ll, do you feel like a show dig yet?

Having jumped through so many hoops.

I’m sure it’ll all look great when done and you see the whole package.

Nice one fella.

Somehow not surprised CA has so much bureaucracy to get YOM plates.

When I put YOM plates on the fintail (in WA), it was easier. I found them at a yard sale, went to the local DOL where the plates were checked and recorded, paid a nominal fee, and that was it. Since then the car is exempt from registration fees, counted as “permanent plates”. Mind you this was 20 years ago, but I doubt it has changed much.

No doubt worth the effort anyway, they just look right on an old car.

I was a little surprised they didn’t allow plates from any year the model was produced, it’s a little nuts to make everyone find the exact year and then charge them for vanity plates when they were issued by the state originally with no custom letters and numbers! That’s a step too far. We have the reissue 60's plates, I can see charging for those, but these are real.

Calling it a vanity plate is weird - it’s a year of manufacture plate, a pretty standard concept, so I thought. I think the WA way is a good one - find a plate from the year the car was made (shouldn’t be a problem, plenty of plate sellers out there), one time transfer fee, and then you’re done. The car is technically limited to show/testing/workshop use, but I strongly doubt that is enforced. The registration fee on my modern car quadrupled this year, which makes the virtually free registration on the fintail even sweeter.

I might have to sell my W123, , adding the M37 to the fleet will take my attention away, If I can only have one I would want a TD or an older Merc since it isn’t my main transport. But I want to find someone who would take care of it, it has a few little issues that don’t prevent it from being driven but are a pain to fix. But it’s in great shape with a newer low mileage (for a W123) engine and totally refurbished AC.

I can only deal with one old car - outside storage here is terrible for old cars, and housing/garage costs are also off the charts. It also frees up time (especially with the unending rain, as the fintail generally is only for dry days).

Finding the right buyer can be tough - I was thrilled when I found am old man who wanted my W126, he had one in the past and wasn’t ignorant. Price it out of beaterdom to attract enthusiasts, that might be a key.
