I'm sorry but... Am I missing something?

Kinja'd!!!

BaT has listed this 1-owner IS sedan... But why?

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

It’s got 82k miles, which is low, but not WOW-low. It’s got the mid-level interior. It’s automatic, and therefore the most common variety of IS: auto, sedan, suede interior. There’s almost a dozen on my local CL. It’s not exactly immaculate... little scratches and the interior is fairly dirty (those door cards...). The model itself is still far from being rare. It’s better than most you’ll find on CL for sure, but there’s still an abundance of good examples out there.

And those wheels are inferior to the factory 5-spokes in every way. The seller says he bought the car and those were on there... How? Why? That would seem to imply this seller is not the original owner... he probably got it from the original owner himself and is flipping it.

It also was booped at some point (it happens!), but there’s a 2 year gap with no registration...?

Admittedly, the black paint is not common and looks excellent.

Is the only other appeal the paper trail that it’s been maintained? Since it’s under 90k miles, the only thing it would have really needed at this point is oil and brakes.

The comments section is surprisingly positive. I don’t understand. Am I crazy here, folks?

An early 2000's slushbox Lexus sedan in okay shape with questionable history? Yeah, I’m with you on this one. BaT is dropping the ball. Especially when you remember that Oppo’s own resident Japanese exporter has had some of his vehicles turned down for being “uninteresting”.

Kinja'd!!!

Tbf BaT’s listed some weird shit in the past so idk what their standards are. Seems like from their listing section anyone can list a car as long as they pay the fee.

It makes no sense at all. Imagine if I tried to tell you all that I was going to list my IS. We would all have a good laugh. But it’s the same year, trim level, mileage, and condition as his car. AND I just footed major service, AND it’s a Sportcross, which is actually rare and desirable* (*in comparison to an auto sedan).

Oh, and it has mismatched tires. Alright....

I don’t generally follow BaT but I’m very surprised to see how well-received it is in the comments. I wonder what it will go for. Your IS is much more interesting

I saw this today when I was stuck in the airport and I thought of you immediately but I didn’t get to post it.

It’s a two owner car, it seems. Still doesn’t explain, and actually detracts from, why BAT is listing. It’s a recent purchase and flip, that makes me question, not appreciate.

I’ve spent the last ten minutes trying to figure out what ilk of Camry/ES300 those wheels came off of, but for the life of me I can’t (or am probably wrong about source model).

They almost look they came from an Avalon?

Also, good catch. Missed that it was “purchased from the original owner,” but just as you said, that does not inspire confidence.

Well, I can stop obsessing.

They’re an OE 16" IS300 offering, Lexus # 426112A040

I don’t think I’ve ever seen those in the wild.

Grew up mostly in Rockville - drove by that dealership on Thanksgiving day ... I’d skip this car. That’s an awful lot of stuff to forgive. Find another car.

I stopped visiting BaT maybe two years ago, after having browsed it near-daily for a year or so, before BaT Auctions was even a thing. When they started having too many auctions nearly every day, and the sheer volume of posts and auctions was too much to keep up with, I just stopped.

BaT historically featured plenty of oddballs and rare-but-not-valuable cars, which was what kept it interesting. Personally, I’d think that BaT Auctions should really be for rare (valuable or not) cars that you’d normally search nation-wide to buy your desired example of, and not cars that you could find a dozen or two of in any major metropolitan area (you’d search nation-wide for a good Lancia, but 2000s 911s are in every metro area).

Oh, and about the Lexus here, pretty much just a nice used car. They’ve gotten a bit too close to nice used car before, but this one is pretty much a new low, unfortunately.

I think there’s a reason none of us have seen them in the wild.
