Yes it did a short takeoff right there from what appears to be a taxiway and yes I filmed it for you. Video after the jump.

I used to ride in those from time to time, pretty cool, now that the bugs are worked out... My cousin was supposed to be in that one that crashed in AZ or something years ago and had been transferred to something else.

The French horn teacher at UT-Austin, now deceased, served in the Army in WWII. He was supposed to take part in the D-Day invasions, and was on one of the boats of the flotilla that was attacked by German E-boats during practice for the invasion, Operation Tiger . He was in a shallow-draft landing craft that was targeted, and he watched the torpedoes go right under his boat and strike the LST next him. Between the torpedoes and friendly fire, almost 750 Allied troops died in the rehearsal for D-Day.

I don’t remember if he actually made the landing, but his unit was in France and was sent to relieve Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge. While they were en route, they were diverted to southern France to hold a German army group in a besieged position. He finished the war living with a French family, eating bouillabaisse, and lobbing a shell or two into the German positions each day to keep them honest.

Pretty sure he’s just on a runway, not taxiway. That’s a big fat threshold line and so-called piano keys right where he/she’s starting the roll.

I thought they had some software issues early on too, but I can see the disconnect, they are unusual to ride in. My dad has never flown a helo so he has no reference with that, so I can’t ask him.

There are some insane stories if people tell them! I know I had some surreal moments, it’s nothing like WWII though, the scope of that must have been incredibly hard to swallow, I would imagine you just focused on your own little world and hoped for the best.

If you haven’t read them yet, I highly recommend D-Day and Citizen Soldiers by Stephen Ambrose. I was just thinking that it’s time to read them again.

They had lots of issues. But any new system will have issues. It’s unfortunate that so many men died early on, but they are now statistically safer than helos.

Threadhijack:

There have been a lot of those huuuuge Russian cargo planes at IAH as of late. They park by the furthest north runway (by my house)

Just sitting there idling they make a crazy noise. One is doing that right now. Sucks that it’s dark to record the take off properly. These huge carriers usually take off east bound right over my house. They rattle the he’ll out of my windows lol. I can see all the landing gear and all that.

I think you’re right. It’s kinda crazy how close it is to the gates, though.

In 2009 I went to an AIAA seminar by a Boeing engineer who had worked on the Osprey since the genesis of the program (coincidentally enough it was in Albuquerque while I was in town for a training). Obviously the guy had a stake in it, but what I remember most was him talking about how once they got over the early issues and got pilots used to it they loved it and didn’t want to fly anything else.
