So, Jalopnik is a big journalistic enterprise itself a part of Gizmodo and Fusion Media.

...

Yet they are using pictures from Motoring.

Does Jalopnik not get press pictures?

Do they get the pictures but need to remain quiet about it?

I don’t know, this article made me question it.

We don’t usually agree to embargoes (i.e. “hold these photos until...”) so that we can still publish newsy pics and info as soon as it’s available instead of having our hands tied because we agreed to hold back until a deadline. Those kinds of embargoes serve the brand more than they serve the readers. New cars are news! Stuff like that deserves to get out there ASAP because you’re interested in it.

These Motoring.com.au pics were under embargo, but someone hit publish too soon, as Raph noted:

You’re not supposed to see this car. Australia’s Motoring published their story for this car’s debut at the LA Auto Show a few days early and has since deleted it. Oh well. Wheelsmag and CarScoops saved the photos and now we can see the car in its blandness as it is.

Hope that explains it. We typically still get the same public/”use me” shots automakers and PR-types hand out when the car debuts—just not beforehand if there are too many strings attached.

Jalopnik cobbles together a lot of content from other sources to repackage and sell it to the people that read Jalopnik. Just like most of old Gawker was aggregating news and filling in a word jumble with links to other agencies.

These are not ‘press pictures’, it’s an early leak. By referencing motoring’s photos, Jalopnik is not leaking, only reporting on a leak, which insures they receive future early press photos.

That seems quite reasonable and responsible on your part (as Jalopnik) now that you say it...

Here, have a picture of a Mexican car with a short Mexican inside it. It is not embargoed.

G(izmodo)MG was Gawker media, with Gawker fp, until Hogan Hulk smashed them in court for leaking his sex tape. Univision bought Gawker, but did away with the Gawker page. Moving that sort of content to Gizmodo until they brought Fusion/Splinter to Kinja.

It is, and rumours flew that the reason the leaking of the sex tape was such a big deal was that he made extremely racist statements as well, which were rumoured to be the real concern.

Ah, gotcha. Yes. It’s still under embargo, so they need to act like it. The leak of the CLS needs to be treated separately from the actual CLS.

Hulk specifically smashed them for publishing video of the sex tape. Gawker didn’t leak it, they just went further than other news agencies that viewed the content. In their defense they did edit down the sex acts to something like 30 seconds. In not their defense, this is what you get for outing multiple people and having a former employee say snarky shit in court.

Gawker Media used to own everything (Giz, Gawker, Jalopnik, Jez, etc.) until they published an article on Hulk Hogan’s sex tape, but instead of merely writing a story they included a short version of the video. Terry Bollea took Gawker Media and Nick Denton to court with the help of billionaire Peter Thiel, and they held the jury trail in Terry Bollea’s home town. You could say Gawker got what they deserved, but it is scary that Peter Thiel was able to throw money at a personal vendetta and win. Gawker Media sold everything to Univision, who then nuked Gawker but kept everything else AFAIK.
