Kinja'd!!!

Thanks to alignment problems, I have killed my DZ102 tires and am now in need of an alignment and new tires. My goal was to find some decent 200TW tires that would be good for autocross, canyon driving, and maybe track days. Although I might still pick up some Hoosiers or another set of Maxxis RC1s for that. But anyways, I went to a local tire shop and they were able to match the price on the Dunlop Direzza ZII Star Specs that I wanted and got me a sweet deal on an alignment for $50. So the tires should be arriving on Monday and then that will get installed during the week at some point. Hopefully my alignment is just out of spec and not something else is afoot. Because then this will be a simple problem solved for a while. It came out to a total cost out the door of $727.50. It is basically around the same price as if I had bought the tires and had them shipped and then went there and paid fill price for the alignment. Maybe like $30 more this way, but it’s far simpler and the guy was honest about that anyways so I’m happy to give a local shop my business.

Looking forward to trying out the new tires!

Nice. I use the DZ102's as daily driver tires, really nice grip and life for the money.

I have a friend who autocrosses his NB on RE71Rs and absolutely loves them. He was also shopping around for 200TW and nearly jumped of the DZIIs before input from people in other classes.

Solid choice. I was happy with both the ZI SS and ZII (non-SS) I went through on on my NC. They’re communicative, grippy, relatively well-mannered in the rain, and only a little more noisy than average (which you probably won’t notice with the top down). Their lifespan is pretty reasonable for their performance category as well. I got nearly 30k street-only miles out of the ZIs and 15k + about 12 autocross events out of the ZIIs. They definitely aren’t the fastest 200TW rubber out there, but they can still at least be moderately competitive and are very communicative and usable when driven in anger.

The RE71r is the best dry run street tire for autocross. That said the DII*s are better at not hydroplaning in the wet and last much longer on the street.

Yeah I just can’t stand how quickly the RE burns out. I will be doing plenty of street driving so shaving off a couple tenths is irrelevant to me. I can’t win STR with an NB, especially with my suspension setup. So I’m just there to have fun. But the star specs should be pretty good anyways

Yup, that’s what I’m replacing on the Miata. Those were very good for a street tire. Did well enough at the dragon and Canyon roads here in Cali. But the star specs should certainly be an upgrade!

Haha if I don’t like them, I will just drive harder to kill them faster! I don’t see why I’d have a problem with them though. If they truly don’t perform well enough for autocross, I’ll just get Hoosiers and keep these for the canyons

I do love these tires. I know other stuff’s come out since the Z2*, but they’re my usual for the Lemons cars.

That being said, I finally put my sad, neglected daily driver on new RE71Rs and hot dang. It’d stick to the ceiling if I tried, I think. I’ve held back on lemonsing those, though, since I’ve heard they wear a bit faster. (Not having that issue on the Lancer right now, though, but the Lancer also sits a lot.)

I just sold my DZ102 today with my 15" wheels. The 15" tires had a 460TW, but it was time to get rid of them. They were excellent on the road, but for autox the sidewall was too soft. Going to Toyo RA1s (100TW) now.

Yeah the RE71 seems to be the staple. And being in Socal, I’ll never see rain anyways. But these should save me a little money by lasting longer

Maybe for your alignment you should come down to my guy in Camarillo. He is the only alignment tech I’ve ever seen do a proper job, but he’s not just a monkey who listens to a computer, he’s a great resource when you modify your car. With his help I was able to correct the previous owners mistake on my car, and we’ve dialed in the alignment to strike a balance between performance and tire wear. He’s beyond excellent and a must when your car is modified.

Yeah they are great sporty street tires. Autocross.....not so much. I run Toyo R888's for that.

My issue is the tires are too dangerous to go any distance at this point so I wanted to just get the alignment and tires done at the same time. The shop seemed competent enough so we will see how that goes. Miatas are simple at least.

I saw your tire post. That would probably make me tow the car to the shop.

Simplicity isn’t the problem, it’s problem solving skills and a through grasp of how alignment angles and other things affect tire wear and handling. I have seen so many shops align a car to “spec” and they’re unable to fix an alignment issue.

The other thing that drives me nuts about other techs is that if the specs are “in the green” they think they’re done. It doesn’t matter if one tire is towed out a degree or two, if the machine shows in the green they stop.

Oh yeah if I have any issue, I’m going to 100% agree with you and come there. Ideally I want to find a more aggressive setup eventually when I start tracking the car next year at some point. And I definitely wanted someone who knows what they are doing for that!

My guy is definitely the guy for that. I thought I knew most of what I needed to know and was wrong lol. He’s been super helpful with lowering the wear on my Mercedes by reducing the toe in at the back but it hasn’t sacrificed straight line stability. He was able to find some balance I never would have thought of.
