Kinja'd!!!

Gonna take two wings to contain the extra 9 hp the HX makes over the lower CX, DX, VP, and LX trims. As an interesting aside, the Prius C in front of it has a combined 99 HP from the hybrid system to move 2,400 lb. while the Civic HX when new had 115 hp to push around 2,500 lb. Despite being up on power compared to the lower trims (but 12 hp shy of the higher-reving motor in the EX), the HX was the fuel-economy minded model and was available with a CVT. Over a decade apart, but the approach to efficiency is similar - around 2,500 lb, 100 hp, and a CVT. Interestingly enough the HX could also be had with a 5-speed manual that was rated 2 MPG higher than the CVT. The hybrid system plus advances in aero mean that the Prius C does better still by 10 MPG combined. I’d still rather have the Civic. Even with the silly wing and fart can.

That’s interesting that a manual got better economy than a CVT... I wonder what was going on there...

They really were. That’s the era of the original Insight coupe with the covered rear wheels and even the base Civic CX that had no radio IIRC came standard with a double wishbone rear suspension.

They have the same city rating but the manual is higher in the highway. If I had to guess it would be that the CVT actually has a lower top ratio. Remember these 1.6L Honda engines didn’t make a lot of torque, so when cruising in a high gear ratio you need a quick downshift to get any reasonable acceleration. A manual driver can bang a shift from overdrive (5th) to 3rd gear to get into the powerband. These earlier CVT’s couldn’t gear down all that quickly, so they likely limited the highest ratio to a less aggressive overdrive. Modern CVT’s can gear down quicker and modern motors make more torque all over the powerband so they don’t really need to shift down as quickly in a passing situation either. That’s why they can handily beat manuals now. My 6MT Forester gets 2-3 MPG less than my wife’s CVT Outback with the same motor and it weighs 300 lb. les. But I still love my manual!

I should add it’s in Albuquerque near KAFB. I’ve been here four weeks in the last six but I’ve been working sun up to sundown so I haven’t had a chance to check out anything you recommended me :( It sucks being here but never going more than a few blocks from the hotel.
