Oh man, I feel for this kid. Grew up in a similar way. Is this part of a secret Santa thing?

Whelp, that reminds me that I need to hit the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree at the mall this weekend.

Us, too. We’ve been doing it for a few years now. It kills me when I see some tags still hanging in late December.

That is why Father Christmas by The Kinks is a great Christmas song. It reminds us that a lot of kids want things that meet basic needs for Christmas.

See if you can sign up and deliver the presents. I used to do it with my dad when I was a kid. Excellent way to give your kids perspective and teach them about empathy. Something a great number of people over the age of twenty-five seem to be lacking.

All part of the phenomenon of hashtag activism. I Tweeted about it, so I’m helping.

No, you’re not.

Used to volunteer for cradles to crayons and around Christmas we would fill hundreds of these Christmas wishes. It’s a big warehouse with tons of donated clothing, school supplies, and toys. On each note the kids would Give us their clothing sizes and we would assemble a clothing pack and school supply pack for them and find a gift that meets their (very modest) requests. It was awesome seeing requests as simple as a mystery novel or action figure and being able to find a killer gift for them. Some of the kids would just ask for extra clothes instead and nothing makes you feel shittier than giving a kid a winter jacket as their Christmas present while you wish for a set of wheels for your car.

I wouldn’t feel shitty about it. Rather, I’d be thankful that I am in a situation where my basic needs for food, shelter and warmth are obtainable. I’d be thankful for my ability to work to support my family, and thankful for those in my life who worked to get me where I am. Work that doesn’t always involve a paycheck.

So many of these kids come from broken homes or horrible life situations, and where I may have started life at home plate, or maybe even first base, these kids are still sitting in the dugout through no fault of their own. It’s really a shame, and those of us who are able should do what we can to make their lives even a little bit more joyous, or at least make sure they don’t go hungry.

Yeah exactly I was exaggerating a bit I didn’t feel like shit I was actually just excited that organizations like that exist and that I can make 50+ Christmas wishes come true in a day thanks to the donations of thousands of other fortunate people like ourselves.
