Do you feel like rebuilding a diesel in the near future?

Can you rebuild the engine yourself? Because if not, there’s going to a repair bill in your future that’s a lot more expensive than $400!

‘runs weak’ - I’m not sure how you’d be able to even tell that in a 240D of that vintage.

I messaged the seller to determine if it’s “weak almost no acceleration?” Or “weak hardly running”. They’re only rated at like 67 hp from factory.

Running correctly, you’re looking at 0-60 in close to 20 seconds, it doesn’t take much drop off to render the car basically undrivable.

Based on the seller’s comments, I’m with Party-vi on the rebuild.

I agree with Pary-vi it looks like a great project for rebuilding the engine. Ooo or you could do an engine swap.

For $400, at least you’re not paying a lot to learn.

Can confirm this. My ride to school my freshman year of high school was with a friend that lived one house up who had the family’s old W114 era diesel to drive. While showing upto school in a nicely kept, classic benz was cool, it was deathly slow. I rode with him once on the interstate, and merging at half the speed of traffic was an experience.

In retrospect, it was the prefect car for a teenage boy. Looked cool, but was deathly slow and proved to be a tank when he crashed it.

Ha - yeah that is the perfect car for a teenage boy - at least from the parents’ point of view!

Actually, he was into the car too. I was nice enough and old enough to be cool. He even managed to spin it one morning in an intersection that had some ice hiding in a shaded spot and get a speeding ticket in it. Getting pulled over in front of the school made for quite the topic of conversation in the halls that day.

The seller says it “runs weak”. That could be because it’s a slow turd, or because something is actually wrong. The problem is if it’s something wrong and you need a rebuild pistons get expensive for these, and I don’t think you’ll want to be adjusting the valves yourself if you’re not too experienced. They all leak oil. It would be worth it to ask what they mean when they say “weak”. For a 240D, if the engine isn’t all there it’s better to skip and find another one. FYI, this car has a quicker 1/4 mile time than a 0-60 time; it is slow as balls.
