I find myself googling for pictures of EEK Dodge Daytona’s.... and..... liking them.

Just keep repeating to yourself “they’re basically K cars, they’re basically K cars, etc.” until this feeling goes away.

I mean, they’re not terrible *looking*, but everything else about them is pretty terrible.

I grew up in western PA and these were all over the place in the late 80s. By the time I moved to NC in 1994, they were all gone.

That should be enough.

I see more Chevy Berettas than I do Daytonas.

Don’t know if it was an 87 or not but an older (than pictured above) Daytona with SHELBY boldly written down the side absolutely blew the doors off my old MX3 GS in an impromptu street race back in the day. The thing looked like a pile, and it surprised the hell out of me. The young lady behind the wheel had one hell of a shit eating grin on her face when I caught her at the next light. Too bad my bruised youthful ego prevented me from getting some tuning tips from her. ;)

Don’t get me wrong, ‘87 Shelbys are well worth some time and interest. A boutique factory-supported go-faster car with special badging et al, not dissimilar to a Hurst Olds from a decade before. They’re neat. But, they’re a bit fragile. Then there’s getting parts for an Omni in general and a Shelby-special-parted-small-production Omni in specific. Some things are easy, some things are much harder... and at the end of the day, it’s a cheap FWD ‘80s Mopar that happens to go (relatively) fast, which is in a way like having psoriasis instead of leprosy.

In high school, a friend had a red Daytona. He absolutely loved it. He sang about it frequently (imagine SirMixaLot’s Testarossa , but replace it with Daytona ) But he was 17. And unrepentantly white, with a mullet.

This car has seen some stuff, man.

I love the way the Daytonas with the pop up headlights look. You don’t see any of them on the road anymore though, which should probably tell us something.
