I Miss My Old Boat

The sounds it made, with minimal mufflers and a sweet ‘murican Ferd Vee Eight!! Oh they were sweet sounds. That probably caused me tinnitus, to be honest.

Kinja'd!!!

But it was fun ripping around in the very early morning fog, among many other things.

These are the things I think about when it’s cold and windy out.

I miss mine too. Been 8 years *sheds single tear*. Moved away from the great lakes so can’t justify a boat where I live plenty of water but it’s just not the same as the mighty lake Ontario. To lazy to search but I’ve posted about it before. I know the fog feels so fun. Have a million boat stories but the one i rarely mention is the fact that I used to drive 4-5 miles out towards the middle (not really the middle its over 50 miles wide where i lived) of the lake and take a nap once in a while. Waking up and then trying to figure out where due to winds and current you are was a blast.

That’s awesome. We live near a small-ish lake (well, by comparison to a great lake it’s tiny) but it’s got a lot of coves and islands, and a complex shoreline. We used to take turns at night driving around all over the place while the other person sat with eyes closed, then stopping and switching places - trying to figure out where you were based on things you could see in the dark, like mountains, tree lines, island shapes, etc.

People who didn’t know the lake well were confounded by this game, even with their eyes open.

Well, to be fair, I replaced it with something nicer but it doesn’t sound as good. More than the volume, there’s a weird harmonic dissonance that happens between the transmission or v-drive (or just the engine sound?) and the note of the exhaust. That actually drives me crazy more than the volume. Everything else about the newer boat is amazing though, so I’m easily able to let it go.

Mine had a bad hum between the motor and outdrive, probably a wasted bearing. But it never vibrated and was super smooth so I didn’t bother. Didn’t help that I had zero insulation in the doghouse because it all fell out and I never replaced it.

New boats are great. My father in law is looking to replace his ‘04? Sundancer 240 with the 383 Stroker with a newer, larger SeaRay with twin V6s. The V6s are awesome and use way less fuel.

SeaRays in general are good boats. I’m an inboard/v-drive fanboy, being a watersports enthusiast on a small lake, but SeaRays are among the best sterndrives for sure.

My “new” boat is an ‘03, haha. My old one was an ‘89. The prices of the newer wake boats are absolutely stupid. Like, my boat was $55k new. I bought it this summer for just under $30k, 14 years old. One of the biggest reasons for holding value is the new equivalent boat is $110k.

Oh ya.... Don’t even get me started on new boats, insane depreciation here. I think my FIL’s was $200k new, and he bought it for $30k. Smaller, more trailerable stuff always holds it value better.

Ha! Wow.

I actually wrote up a whole thing on the prices/features of new wake boats... I haven’t had the time to put images into it and post it. Maybe today?

Basically, it goes like this: in 1990, a base model Nautique was price-equivalent to a 3-series. A luxury for sure, but obtainable for many. Now, they’re in line with the 7-series, for the same equivalent model of boat. HUH? Something’s off with that.

Boats are weird.
