Kinja'd!!!

Saturday afternoon is my office Christmas party. I dread it every year. I shouldn’t, because I have a really nice group of employees who seem to like their jobs, and for the most part, each other.

I have run out of time being a startup. All my people want, and largely deserve, substantial pay increases. I have encouraged them to advocate for themselves and negotiate with me on compensation. Boy, did they take me up on it.

In the end, half of my employees are getting significant increases despite a difficult year. Because they are worth it, and because I will still do well. I could not say no when they were right about their value, and I can still make money. It may sound weird, but my current quality of life and personal peace means more than money, and these people are a part of all that. I want to keep this group

I digress. The office Christmas party is Saturday. I have some young families, and I am surprising them. I hired a Santa and Mrs. Claus (real beard and belly), and bought presents for all the kids. Santa will crash the party with a sack of presents.

I always hated office parties when I was an employee, so I have tried to make it better as an employer. But I worry that they just see it as an ordeal. Who knows?

Don’t even try telling me that doesn’t have a nice ring to it.

Are you worried they won’t have fun? Because I don’t think that’s a problem. Santa, presents, free food, who could not have fun?

Are y’all hiring? You don’t even have to put my name in the name. In fact, I’ll even work for gumdrops!

My work has 2 parties. A family party, & non-family party. The family party is for the kids to come too, & it’s quite civilized. I don’t bother with that one. The non-family party is great. Open bar, drinking games, no kids (except a few babies, not mobile), & a great time.

At my previous employer we did the holiday party at the CEO’s house, and it was always fine. Just hang out, get some free food and drinks, do the stealing Santa game, etc. I don’t think people ever found it a burden.

I’m going into my 3rd year with current employer, and I’ve never been interested in going to any of their parties. My first year they did a big formal event, and last year and this year they’ve gone with stupid themed parties. I don’t want to have to dress up or do any costuming for a work event. I guess some people consider it fun but to me, it’s just a pain. I could go without doing anything special but that feels lame too. So instead I’m just skipping. Hopefully we’ll do a department event that will be more relaxed.

I’m sure they will all enjoy it!

We have our (non-family friendly) holiday party tomorrow night. It usually turns into a shit show and I don’t really feel like being hungover Saturday. Plus I’m looking for a new job anyway. And I have a date with this tomorrow night:

When I was in high school, I worked at this really nice private country club on the golf course. Every year they would throw a Christmas party where the members would bartend and grill steaks and whatnot for us. There were only usually about a dozen people around my age (my other golf worker buddies) and then everyone else was either a crazy rich member, or one of the old strict PGA pros. The parties were a blast! So laid back. I’m sure everyone will enjoy it, you seem like a very solid boss.

You’ve spoken of your office parties in the past and you have always been generous, a modern day Mr Fezziwig. Sounds like working for you would be a good gig.

I wish my current employer had this figured out - sometimes they get it, sometimes they really really really don’t. Good on you.

I like that you are calling it a Christmas party and not a Winter Solstice party or some other nonsense. Even though I am a card carrying member of a Christian religion, I laugh out loud when I hear the evangelicals yelling about The War on Christmas. They also yell at people who are driving too slowly and impeding their progress to get to the shopping mall where they are helping to capitalize Christmas... I’ve always viewed Christmas as a sacred event where families spend an intimate day with little else going on and just enjoying each other. And the impetus for that is remembering the birth of Christ. Nobody can take that away from me, war or otherwise.

But that isn’t what your post was about, is it?

I hope you and your team and their families enjoy the afternoon.

Keep your motivations pure and adversity can become opportunity.
