Google came back with a Reddit thread.

Each number is the previous term times 3, plus 2.5.

So the next term is (127 * 3) + 2.5= 381 + 2.5= 383.5

And the one after that is (383.5 * 3) + 2.5 = 1150.5 + 2.5 = 1153

I think its (X*3)+2.5

383.5

1153

3461.5

The difference between a number and the next one in the series is three times the difference between the number and the one before it. So, the difference between 13 and 3.5 is 9.5, and the difference between 41.5 and 13 is 3x9.5, or 28.5, and so on.

I want to agree because math, but pattern spotting and critical thinking/reasoning are pretty important abilities to develop. I thought standing up and reading your book reports in elementary school also was worthless, but it actually helps develop public speaking skills and reduces anxiety when giving speeches or addressing the public — it may not be useful in a lot of jobs, but certainly helps trial attorneys like me.

13 - 3.5 = 9.5 x 3 + 13 =41.5
41.5 - 13 = 28.5 x 3 + 41.5 = 127

Fortunately, even after taking the most complex advanced computational mathematics (and programming the algorithms into the computer) I can confirm there there is basically zero application to describing an arbitrary series of numbers and told to find the next one.

This would go back to the Business Analyst who wrote the requirements with a note.

“Incomplete documentation provided. Development cannot continue. Please provide function definition so that it may be implemented correctly.”

The numbers increase in intervals that must follow a specific pattern, so I just did the arithmetic to see what those intervals were and then started looking at those intervals to see if they were multiples of any of the numbers in the series or of the differences between those numbers. By staring at them for a minute, I guessed that 3 was a good multiple to start with, and when I checked that out with a calculator, I was right.
