A Long Island done right is a serious drink. I’ve honed my recipe from experience at many a bar over time. Most bartenders, in my experience, don’t make a good one. So, when I got a good one, I’d ask their recipe.
These days when I go to a bar, I almost always order a beer. Harder to mess that up.

I’ve drank a lot of Long Island’s throughout my life so I know that it’s hit or miss depending on the bar, bartender, quality of liquors, how many times the liquors have been married etc. Long Island’s used to be the best way for me to consume a lot of alcohol in the shortest period of time.

A poor margarita can be rescued though by adding more tequila. You don’t even have to have good tequila. It’s usually what I’ll order at a casual restaurant like Chili’s when a beer doesn’t fit the food quite right or they don’t have good ones on the list.

I mostly drank it to get shitfaced. The people who order it at my bar are almost always doing it to get shitfaced, they definitely aren’t the “well crafted drink” type and I certainly wasn’t either in my younger years when I was ordering it.
This is how 90% of these interactions go:
Me: What can I get for you?
Them: Idk what do you suggest?
Me: *Trying not to roll my eyes at this stupid question* Idk, what do you like? Beer? Wine? Whiskey? Vodka?
Them: Uhhhhhh...idk....can I get a Long Island?
Which brings me to my next point, do not come up to a bar and ask me what I think you should drink. Everyone has their own preferences. Nobody walks into McDonald’s and asks the person taking their order “Idk what do you suggest?”.
