f86sabre, what’s up with Delta maintenance? On our way to Hawaii the A330-300 we were supposed to take from Minneapolis had some kind of issue that led to us getting a new plane (after a 2 hour delay). Then on the return my brother’s flight from Honolulu to LA was the recipient of a new plane after a 5 hour delay due to engine issues on the original aircraft’s previous leg. As if that wasn’t enough, my connecting flight from Atlanta to Wichita was delayed 2 hours because our MD-88 needed a part replaced for dispatch.

Too many delays, not enough sleep, and just enough jet-lag to leave me pretty exhausted this morning. Back to work, where I will probably continue to have no work to do...

Hey, at least it’s not someone like Allegiant where you might be waiting days for the next flight...

Or the other end of the spectrum, Southwest, where they’ll bring you an identical 737 eight minutes later and you’re still on time.

Legacy carriers can suck it.

I think Delta is generally pretty good, but Jake just hit a bad run. And yeah, having all identical planes makes that easy for SWA, they’re great-

I think my issue is mostly the same kind of issue I have with basically any service: empty over-promising. So our first A330 was broken, big whoop. What’s an hour or two delay for a 9 hour flight? But to get on the intercom and tell us it’s only 15 minutes every 5 minutes until you finally admit we need to change planes and it’ll take an hour, that’s annoying.

And the bad luck that it was so many issues in so few days.

Well, that’s not on f86sabre, that’s on the Delta gate agents. What many people fail to understand is that those waiting just want honest information. If it’s going to be 2 hours, tell me 2 hours.

It’s on the crew, not the gate agents. The captain was the one telling us it’d be 15 minutes.

The planes having the problems in the first place though...I don’t know where that blame goes. Not that there’s any “blame”, I’m mostly just stating that my family and I were delayed for maintenance more than I’d normally expect in a single trip. Shit happens, stuff breaks.

I don’t think they’re trying to lie, they just don’t know. If 80% of issues are resolved in 15 minutes, then they’ll gamble. If I understand correctly, some maintenance issues fall under FAA guidance and have mandates about what you can or can’t do (fix vs replace, etc). Having a single model is a big part of why Southwest has the reputation they do.

I have yet to be on a plane that I had to get off of due to a mechanical failure and I fly about once a month. To date I’ve had the best service from Delta and Alaska.

The biggest on tarmac delays I’ve experienced are from de-icing at SLC.

I flew united yesterday, they forgot to refill the toilet with blue juice. The flight attendent left two large bottles of water in the lav. to assist with flushing. I was in seat 12B on a CRJ200. At least I wasn’t in seat 13B, directly across from the toilet.

For sure. I just think they should be trained to not say it if they don’t know, or be conservative. If they had said “we don’t know how long it’ll be but we’re talking with the airline for a solution” I’d be less annoyed than empty 15 minute promises.

Yep. I’d also be happy if they’d stop padding their flight times. I’ve had several recent AA flights listed at 90 minutes and none has actually taken more than 65 minutes. “Good news, folks, we’re 5 minutes early” on arrival sounds better than “Sorry, folks, we’re 20 minutes late” on departure...on the same flight.
