Would it be wrong to use this as a winter beater?

Because I mean, FWD boat! I mean sure it’s kind of rare and collectible maybe? I just can’t help but want to make this a winter beater!

Those underbody shots make it look really solid. I really can’t imagine that behemoth would do well in the snow

Put some meaty ass snow tires on her and I beat she’d be fine. That’s a lot of weight on the drive wheels you know.

It’s not the front I’m concerned about. Snows all around certainly helps any car.

Front wheel drive, big block, with a solid underbody, this is what I say:

This is a cool car - and the seller is right that $14k was a lot of cash for a new car in 1978.

It would be a great winter beater, and it’s *almost* too cool for that. I can’t imagine it would ever make financial sense to actually restore it though, so I wouldn’t feel too bad. Just try to wash it (inc underside) regularly okay?

Only thing I wonder about is what transmission it uses and whether it’s easy to repair/get parts if needed?

What happens when your car starts sliding in the snow and you can’t stop it? Surely, after the fifth collision, your three mile long hood will no longer be able to stop the crash from affecting the cabin.

I’m not a fan of the exterior design. But the interior is really amazing :)

Obviously gotta get that triple A for the constant snow bank removal.. Haha but yes that interior tho.

Well I’m torn. When I was a kid my dad had a 79 Delta 88. Granted that was RWD, so not exactly the same, but that thing was a TANK in the snow. There were days that it was the only vehicle we had that would get out of the driveway (including the truck). I would think FWD would only improve that situation.

On the other hand, this car is in awfully nice shape to use as a winter beater. I mean it’s not some iconic special edition car in mint condition that it would be a crime to hurt, but it is awfully clean.

In the end, nothing pains me more than to see a car put away and never driven. Hit the underside with some undercoating to protect it from the ice/snow/salt and drive on!

I saw a picture of a Toronado, as to your question, it’s irrelevant, get it.

Can confirm, early-ish Toronados are darn good in the snow. They were still fairly common beaters back when I was in school, and they seemed to do as well as the (at the time) newer crop of fwd shit boxes. That being said, one of the best cars I ever drove in the snow was my 1977 Olds 98 Regency with a 455 long block and 2 bags of sand in the trunk.

I wouldn’t, but mostly because it’s the higher-end XS instead of a regular Brougham - the XS had the bent-glass rear window and a power sunroof, cost a couple grand more than the Brougham when new , and less than 10% of the 77-78 Toronados made were the XS model.
