Kinja'd!!!

Some of my warmest childhood memories come from listening to the Magliozzi brothers, Paul Harvey, and Garrison Keillor with my dad in the pickup driving off to some junkyard to scavenge for John Deere or Studebaker parts.

I feel inclined to believe, and I hope it turns out to be true, that this was an uncalled-for firing, and that he really did just make an honest mistake. I don’t want to imagine the man who read the News From Lake Wobegon as a sexual predator.

I have yet to hear/read what he is alleged to have done. In any event, isn’t he already retired? I’m not sure how he could be fired from a show he doesn’t do anymore.

He stepped down as host in 2016, but still contributes.

He says he went to pat a female coworker on the back, inadvertently touched bare skin, and immediately apologized.

Well, that’s his story.

Picking a side based on how much you like someone can send you down any number of dangerous roads.

Unlike all of the other firings, there is only one allegation in this instance. Let’s give it a week before passing judgement.  I nnocent until proven guilty, right?

His story actually said his hand went 6" up her shirt. It’s interesting that so many people are leaving out that part since that’s a detail he put out there. My wife and I are having a hard time figuring out how that happened accidentally.

As an aside, I grew up listening to PHC, and really enjoyed it. However it really went downhill in the last decade of it’s run. Lake Wobegon became a sad, morose place in Keillor’s mind and hearing the news became forgettable. The music always rocked, but that has more to do with the guests and the excellent musicians in the house band.

I hate to say it, but so far every time something comes out about a dude like this, it’s never an isolated incident and doesn’t stay an isolated story for long. Doesn’t matter whether it’s someone who I already hated like Roy Moore, or someone I previously supported like Al Franken. For creepy dudes, their creepiness is a pattern.

I don’t have good feelings toward the man, but his show was pretty entertaining and every report about him makes it sound like this isn’t something even slightly in his nature. I mean, the guy is described as “awkward”, “fatherly”, etc, by tens of people that have worked with him over the years. I just don’t see it.

I know... This is just the first guy who was actually someone I admired in my younger years, and a big part of where I grew up at the time I grew up. He always seemed like the awkward nice guy, definitely not a creepy groper.

Never meet your heroes. :(

I left Minnesota in 2006, and haven’t listened to PHC since, so I guess I quit when it was good. The music definitely was always good!

Yeah, you could tell he was burned out. Basically after PHC got the Hollywood treatment it changed. I have a lot of CDs with material from the 80s and 90s. So much more upbeat.

I still spend a lot of time on PHC’s YouTube channel listening to the music acts. All of the written material, however, ran out of steam long ago.

I wouldn’t lump Franken in with these people. There’s a very basic, but important difference, between doing something rude because you’re a stupid jerk and think it’s funny, and doing something creepy because it gives you a boner.

And while I think one could rightly argue that the intent doesn’t make any difference to the person whose space/privacy was violated, I would add that it’s a lot easier for a comedian to drop an act that’s rude when they see they’re not get rewarded with positive attention, than it is for a perv who gets off on exerting their power over other people, and for whom disapproval never meant much in the first place.

The original photo of Franken with his hands on Leann Tweeden was not part of a comedy act, and like basically everyone other guy who’s had some kind of accusation made about him since Harvey Weinstein, Franken’s behavior was part of a pattern.

All the other information from multiple other women that’s come out since then has been about unwanted advances in various situations that were not in the context of any comedy act. In addition to the photo, Leann Tweeden described him creating a situation of a rehearsal that he could use as an opportunity to make unwanted physical contact with her.

Up til now I liked his politics, but no, we can’t nitpick about why what he did is some degree less pervy than other dudes with similar patterns of bad behavior and therefore less bad.

I’d love it if only politicians with whom I disagree were the ones negatively impacted by their sexually-harassing behavior being brought to light, but the reality is that men being gropey douchebags cuts across all politics.

I had to look into it, as I hadn’t been following. You’re right. Franken shows a pattern of unacceptable behavior that goes beyond a bad taste in “jokes”.

Holy shit, I just read the story at the WP, and I really hope we hear how it turns out, because it sounds like someone jumping on the bandwagon.

Obviously we don’t know both sides, but if his story is true, this is deplorable for someone to take advantage of this surge.

A hand on the back? Really?

I really wish that were the case, and I was sad when Pelosi came out today saying the congressman should resign. It doesn’t matter if he’s a Democrat or republican, people should be given a chance to have the evidence heard.

You aren’t the only one. Garrison was the joke of the day on Wait, Wait today.

I’m praying that this was a misunderstanding. I don’t pray often.
