You would not have Engineering, meaning everyone would be Bachelors of Arts majors (* shudders *) and cars, airplanes, cell phones, computers, and countless other feats of technology would not exist.

I don’t think Henry Ford or the Wright brothers knew calculus! Plus that would just mean we wouldn’t have to worry about global warming!

As a Physics teacher many of my students share your viewpoint, that is Calculus only seems to exist to make problems more complex and tedious.

Beam equations, breh. There are tables for them, sure, but you can barely design anything that experiences any kind of load whatsoever without them in at least a table form, and the tables are derived *accurately* using calculus. Literally everything is a beam.

The Wright’s wing spar sizing, Henry Ford’s chassis rails - technically possible to come up with via trial and error, but not practical - and the industries that made all the parts needed their own beam equations solved. The strength of the parts in industrial lumber mills, the loads-handling at the foundry. Beams LITERALLY everywhere and for everything. The industrial revolution is beams.

Oh, and all the heat transfer and braking and torque and so on. All their own calculus forms.

It would, you just wouldn’t have derivatives of those functions!

My high school physics teacher taught mechanics without calculus because not all the eleventh graders had calculus yet. He used to teach a unit on calculus to start the course, but stopped and resorted to just giving equations without.

Calculus was Newton’s work, right? I had to look it up and saw he argued with Leibniz over who did it first. Leibniz is a name I remember from math but I don’t remember wtf it was for; I think he had some constant or formula or some shit named after him.

Anyway, I’m glad that many people I don’t know or ever heard of have done things I don’t or could ever comprehend so that I can marvel in the blissful ignorance their contributions have made to mankind.

Calculus is a pain in the a$$, largely the reason why I’m not an engineer right now. But I absolutely f’n love what it can do. You want to drop into orbit a million miles away while doing 350,000 mph? Got it covered. How about calculating wind loads on a 3 mile long suspension bridge? Handled. Optimize fuel burn in your high performance turbo motor? Yep, that too. Blast a ton of payload into orbit AND F’N LAND BACK ON A BARGE IN THE OCEAN? Calculus...

Calculus is kinda my kryptonite: I’ve dropped out of it 3 times. First was on me: partying not studying. Other two times I just couldn’t get it. Need to try again and work harder at it.

True, honestly though mechanics doesn’t really need much calculus unless you want to get fancy. Most of it is just chain rule and product rule everything.

It’s when string has mass, inclines are curved, and pulleys have moments that it gets messy.

From what I remember they really developed it around the same time. Newton got published first so he gets credit for inventing it and Liebniz for validating that he “made up math correctly.” Liebniz notation is the one we use over Newtons though, and from what I understand that is a good thing.

This is also the reason that I elected to go the teacher route instead of being an engineer or a Physicist. When I declared my major my Physics professor asked if I was still going to take multi-variable Calculus and some Theoretical Physics class, it was hard to not laugh and say NO!
