On Thanksgiving I got to drive a 2017 Subaru WRX, the same car the local dealer told me was a “limited production car”, and wouldn’t let me drive.

Kinja'd!!!

It looked like this, it was good. Superlight clutch, shifter was mega light too. Felt stupid quick until 40 but dropped off a little after that. 8/10 would not trade Boostang for WRX.

My uncle had it for the week, as soon as I walked outside to say hi, he threw me the keys.

I’ve been told by dealers that you are not allowed to test drive the WRX without BUYING it first.

Yeah... good luck with that strategy

Dropped off at 40?

A) That can be fixed with a tune from what I’ve read

B) That happens to be the speed limit in on about 80% of roads I drive so that is almost perfect for me.

Limited quantities? Here in the great snowy north I can’t swing a dead puffin without hitting one. There’s dozens around here. They’re the sports car du jour for the bearded 30-something crowd.

I had 0 issues test driving a WRX STi, it was so new it only had 4 miles on it at the beginning of the test drive.

That is very much the exception, not the rule. Subaru dealers are notorious for being insanely stingy with test drives of the Wrx. STI even more so. Showing up at a dealership for a test drive scheduled a week in advance, only to be told “no test drives” is extremely frustrating for someone with cash in hand, especially when you show up to the dealership IN a fairly new Subaru.

I’ve had better luck getting in limited production Porsches for test drives...

(edit) Also, how did you like the STi? How did it compare to the E90's?

I know I just live in Northern Jersey but we do get snow here too. Yeah, the dealership kinda sucked.

They won’t let you test drive a WRX, but I have had no issues getting to test drive an STI, crazy. Now I have had issues getting to test drive a Golf R depending on the dealership. Some dealerships are overly cautious about the vehicles they are trying to sell I think. I for one will not buy a vehicle without a test drive.

How do you get dead puffins? Can you get a live one? Asking for a friend who loves puffins.

I was actually surprised how easy it was to test drive. The only reason I went was to see how difficult it would be to get a test drive.

I’ve been spoiled by my BMWs. The Subaru had a lot of road noise, and was not as refined as the M3. That shouldn’t be surprising given the fact that the M3 was a 65k car in 2011 and the Subaru is a 40k car in 2017. I found the clutch to be way too light; it seems all Japanese cars I’ve driven have really light clutches. Making them easy to drive, but lacking feel. Steering was good and the gear throw was on point. It didn’t really feel that powerful, maybe because I had to keep it bellow 4k RPM, since the engine wasn’t broken in. It just didn’t feel as fast. My dad’s 135is has a mountain of torque at 1500 RPM, this didn’t feel like it. That said, once you learn how to drive it, it’s probably plenty fast. I prefer my E90, but if someone gave me one I wouldn’t be upset.

My ‘13 R was in the shop for some BS and I went to the floor to see if they had a new one and the first two chuckleheads just kinda laughed and said no. I even told them I have an R and I’m looking to get a new one “maybe”, just shook their heads.

Car salesman has to be the dumbest job ever. From day to day you just decide if you want to make money or not...

My dad (A 53 year old tech executive who has owned a ton of expensive Euro metal) was told that on a Golf R.
