I’m going to risk being flamed here, but what the hell. I believe that harassment should not be tolerated and that allegations of such should be investigated thoroughly. I am, however, concerned about this rush to fire, tar, and feather anyone about whom even a whiff of an allegation comes out. Where I work, we have a very specific process for handling Title IX complaints. The complaint is investigated in a confidential manner to protect both the complainant and respondent until the final determination on whether the complaint has merit is made. Then action is taken where appropriate.

I realize that not all organizations have a thorough process, but I wish they did.

Don’t light that match yet - these situations are not all the same. But a good reminder for everybody to be respectful and mindful of all their actions.

From the linked article, a quite from the man himself:

“A world in which there is no sexual harassment at all, is a world in which there will not be any flirtation.”

For the youngsters reading this, that’s not how flirtation works.

And to not touch people unless they want you to. Assume your female coworkers don’t want you touching them.

He said he touched her bare back, accidentally, apologized, had the apology accepted, continued his friendship with the accuser and then heard from her lawyer that she was suing for harassment. Sounds like it must not have been an isolated incident? Who knows...

The comments on Jezebel.com about Matt Lauer were illuminating today. People said that one should not mix work and relationships with the glaring exception being when the people who do then marry and live happily ever after... I guess you can avoid the appearance of sexual harassment if you wed soon after.

The stuff that has come to light about Lauer today is just gross though.

What he exactly said was “I meant to pat her back after she told me about her unhappiness and her shirt was open and my hand went up it about six inches.”

I can’t imagine a situation where my hand would go up a woman’s shirt 6" accidently. Apparently she felt the same. I think he might want to explain that a bit more...
