A more powerful Mazda 6

Kinja'd!!!

So, I’m reading up on cars to avoid work, as usual, and see that the Mazda 6 is getting the turbo 4 from the CX-9. What’s interesting about this to me is that my Mazda dealer told me about this last Spring.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I was sitting in a CX-9 (I was there to test the Miata and a new 6; those test drives are on video on my computer), and the owner was chatting with me telling me he was at a dealers meeting where they told him the new 6 was gonna get the CX-9 motor. I smiled politely and with some interest, but didn’t entirely take that as certain because I didn’t think Mazda released finalized info like that so far out from the unveiling. I treated it as a rumor, albeit one with some weight.

An aside about my dealer: he and his family are huge Mazda fans and race rotaries. Well, they must have some money because they decided to turn their hobby into their business and bought out this location from the multi-location dealership conglomerate that was selling. So now they are what all of us wish our dealers were: car nuts who care about driving what they sell. I still feel kinda bad that I gave my business to the Kia dealer.

Dammit, Mazda! Give us the hot engines with the manual!

I understand the sentiment, but really, when you think about it, the kind of stuff that’s most fun to do with a manual car will not be done very often with a new, near-premium, mid-sized sedan. Which is to say, I can see why they didn’t spend the effort to sell such a limited appeal trim.

Hell, I worked at a Mazda dealer back until 2015 and I knew it was coming. They told us the CX-9 was getting smaller and getting a 2.5 turbo that would also go into the 6 and Mazdaspeed3, IF it were to happen. Doesn’t look likely, now.

The sad thing is, they ALSO have a manual developed that can handle the 300+ ft lbs it puts out.

See, that’s what I figured happened here. The company told the dealers a thing would happen, but who knows whether it actually would. I fugured it was kinda like the Skyactive diesel. They said it was coming, but didn’t make it.

I didn’t expect this to actually happen because Mazda has seemed steadfastly resistant to American cries for more power for so long.

Yup, they had the Skyactiv-D engines at the training center in IL, the courses all writ up on how to repair them, and our rep was driving around in a euro-spec one. But it just couldn’t pass emissions or some BS.

I’m honestly not even mad about the lack of stick. I mean sure I’d like it to be an option, but even with auto being the only option this makes the 6 the current top contender for me when it comes time to replace my FoST as a new DD. I owned a gen1 hatch with the v6, and absolutely loved it, and honestly the only thing that stopped me from buying the current gen when it came out was just how gutless the engine is. I loved the way it handled, the interior, and the ride quality, but the complete lack of power just killed it for me.

Sadly, there are just not enough buyers today whose idea of fun is daily-driving a car with three pedals... Hopefully the next Speed3 will some with this engine and the manual.

I hope the CX-5 gets the 2.5T soon.

True. But I’m not holding my breath that there will be another Speed3.

I got all excited because this would be great for me as a DD in like 2 years used or newly bought. It would compliment my NA perfectly. But I refuse to drive auto and with another car I’d really like to have more power than my NA.

To each his own. I can respect that. I have to drive auto, and I haven’t found that it’s killed my joy of driving.

I figured it would happen eventually but was surprised how long it took though, the new 6 was always designated as a 6i in Mazda’s system and Mazda has lately used the i designation for the base engine and s designation for the more powerful engine. So I always assumed that someday there would be an s model too, just took longer than I expected.

I’d love a 6 with 310 lb-ft of torque.

There was nowhere to go but up. They just didn’t seem in a hurry to get there.
