Kinja'd!!!

Also experience with Norwegian Air? I’ve see mixed reviews, either extremely positive or extremely negative

The Wife and I are exploring the possibility of hitting Spain or Italy again next year, and booking separate flights could save $1,000 or more on the whole trip. The only drawback really being that you rely on each flight to be on time to make your connection, and if you miss a connection, too bad. TIA

I usually search for flights on google flights or Matrix ITA which allows you to search for cheaper flights with a layover and skip the second leg among many other custom and specifc search functions.

Yup, exactly what you said. If you have plenty of time between flights – I’d say more than 4 hours, just for safety – AND won’t be in a pickle if somehow you still ended up missing it (i.e. no visa concerns, you can leave the airport and grab a hotel for the night to catch a flight the next day, are OK with the cost of having to buy a new ticket to replace the flight you missed, etc.) – sure, if it will save you a thousand bucks, go ahead. Otherwise generally it’s much better peace of mind to not have to worry about it.

It’s bad enough having connections on the same ticket and have flight delays screw up connections when travelling internationally – just really bad news splitting tickets on top of that. Also remember that typically if you don’t show up for a flight any legs you booked on that ticket beyond leg that might also get automatically cancelled.

Thanks for the tip. I’ve done most of my research on google flights, and if I can get myself to Newark or JFK, I stand to save a substantial amount of money. But if I book from the airport nearest me, it’s exponentially more expensive.

Fair points all. My original plan was get to New York a day early. Hotel for the night. Fly the next evening. I’d still save $500+. Though saving $1,000+ is more motivating. Peace of mind vs cash. That’s the struggle.

Way back in the day, I did it a few times on United and Southwest. It wasn’t to save money, but rather because a 2nd trip came up after I left on the first trip - so I was always connecting in Chicago (hometown).

I would make sure to leave a very long layover - preferably overnight. And you probably can *NOT* check your bags through at your origin, either, FYI.

We had some of the worst travel luck imaginable this year, where pretty much everything that could go wrong did. Multiple missed flights, ridiculous re-routed connections, typhoons, and North Korean missile tests all getting in the way.

At least currently I’m very risk averse when coming to flying because of that – and hey, getting older and having a family I just want shit to be easy and not hustle every dollar as much as I did in my single days. Saving $500 and a night in NYC sounds like a decent middle ground option to have!

Jointly operated by Iberia and British Airways, long haul budget airline, Level offers some pretty sweet transatlantic deals.

Kinja'd!!!

They offer flights from the US to their bases in Barcelona and Paris. From there, you can use one of Europe’s many low cost airlines. Vueling, Transavia, Blue Air and Eurowings are recommended. Stay away from Ryanair and Wizz Air.

Level also operates cool Airbus 330 planes.

I flew Norwegian from NYC to Paris over the summer. From my experience, it is a great airline. The prices are really good too.

If ibera is owned by BA, is it still a joint venture?

Iberia is owned by IAG, who also owns BA. However, Level uses planes and crews that formerly were employed by Iberia.

Norwegian is fine, just make sure you pay for what you want (legroom, luggage, food, etc.)
