Kinja'd!!!

If I had the moneys, this is what I’d buy. I need the crew cab for family hauling duties, and it’s got the 5.3 and a significantly higher tow rating of 9,100 pounds, compared to the 5,700 pound rating that my trusty ‘06 has (the 4.8 and 3:20 rear gears make it slow as dog-poop).

It’s a base model with just a few important options, like my ‘06. Towing package (with built-in trailer brake controller!), locking rear end, factory tinted windows, and a few other little things. I spec’d the 6'-6" bed for this one. The 5'-8" had proven to be just short enough to be a PITA for hauling long stuff. I think having a backup camera would make up for the difficulty of parking 10" more length.. The big thing I spec’d on this one, that my ‘06 doesn’t have, is 4-wheel drive. Do I need 4-wheel drive? Absolutely not ... but it sure would be fun to have!

I love the new base steel wheels. I’d like to find a set of them for my ‘06. I also LOVE this blue color! I miss color. I need color. I am so impossibly bored with silver.

Do you know what would make this truck 10 times cooler? No, not bro rims and Chinese LED light bars. That’s right! Plaid bench seats!!! I would pay an extra thousand dollars for a pair of plaid bench seats. Especially if there were some nice plaid inserts in the door panels to match. Man, that would be tight!

The price? Just under $40k, after current incentives. Not too bad given the realities of today’s marker ... but damn near twice as much what I paid for my brand new ‘06. So, still ouch.

When is this going to happen? Three years at the absolute soonest. That’s when my wife’s CX-5 will be paid off.

The GMC Sierra pisses me off for combining blue/white LED eyebrows with yellow halogen headlight bulbs.

It is far from the only offender of this particular crime (looking at you, Subaru Legacy, Chrysler 200, and many others) but it is an offender nonetheless.

That’s a good looking truck - I don’t think I’ve seen one in that blue.

And it’s got all the stuff you need, none of the gimmicky crap you don’t.

Is the $40k = MSRP minus incentives? You’d be able to do better with some haggling, too—

That’s only on the HD series trucks, the 1500’s should have HID projectors and the LED fogs.

I tried to figure out which headlights I was thinking of and actually I’m thinking of the Yukon.

Kinja'd!!!

I kept picturing I had that C-shaped LED eyebrow where the individual LEDs are visible, which can’t really be seen in this pic, but here they are on a Denali that does have HIDs...

Kinja'd!!!

The Sierra has gone that shape recently but it’s more of a continuous LED strip, and yeah the HIDs are standard.

Yea, I was thinking maybe 20-ish, but sometimes those small engines in a big vehicle get worse mileage than the bigger engine. Though it doesn’t seem like it does much better than the larger engines.

The funny thing is, the GM employee pricing on a 2500HD with the 6.0 port fuel injected engine (still not sold on long term reliability of direct injection) is about 41K for a similarly equipped model.

I think somehow this new GMC could pull it off, especially with the chrome, while any other current-model truck cannot. I think for example it would look weeeeird on an F-150 with their high-tech aluminum body design. The GMC has a bit of a classic look to it, at least in the picture you provided, it does.

Birddog was the one who pointed this out to me, and I’m inclined to agree, that there’s a fair bit of Squarebody heritage in the current bodystyle. My dad’s first truck, which I remember quite fondly, was an electric blue ‘79 Chevy K10 with a plaid blue bench seat. I basically want a modern crew cab version of that truck.

Kinja'd!!! "shop-teacher" (shop-teacher)
11/29/2017 at 16:33, STARS: 0

It’s a touch better, especially cruising at highway speeds. I’d much rather have the better power range and tiny fuel penalty of the 5.3. That said, I’m fairly certain the reason I got this truck so cheap (brand new out the door for under $22k, including an extended warranty), was because nobody wanted a 2wd crew cab with a 4.8. There were so few of them built, that my combination isn’t even in the tow rating page of the owners manual. I had to extrapolate from the other configurations to figure it out. It’s been an excellent vehicle, and it makes me genuinely sad that the rocker panels are starting to rust out on it.

They are, and nothing holds it’s value like a pickup truck. Mine is nearly 12 years old, has 127k miles on it, is starting to rust a bit, and I could still get nearly half what I paid for it back.

In an ideal world I’d love a 60's or 70's truck with an entirely new frame and drivetrain. Also with modern interior amenities. But everything made as much as possible to look like the classic truck. But that would be astronomically expensive, haha. The body work alone to get the size up to a modern truck would be insane.

And I couldn’t quite put my finger on it, since I am not super well versed in truck history, but I just got a hint of that classic truck feeling when I looked at your GMC picture, I had to double take to confirm that, yes, I am in fact looking at a ‘17 model.

Swiss cheese rocker panels are unfortunately a common occurrence in the Salt Belt. I kind of want to get a regular cab 2wd truck with the 5.3 in it...if I could find one in stock around here I bet I could get it for pretty cheap.

My father-in-law has a ‘17 Chevy 1500 CCSB LT Z71 in that bright metallic blue. The truck is gorgeous and the interior is HUGE. So much room in the backseats. And the thing drives like an Accord compared to the gen trucks we have. Sticker was 52? and he was out the door like 46 IIRC.

I’ve grown to like the room in my fullsize, and the 6.5' bed is nice. I do wish my truck was taller though, even with a slight torsion bar crank and 33s the thing is super tiny.

Oh mannn imagine a garage with an Icon Truck, an Icon Bronco and a perhaps a Singer? I’m not typically a Porsche person, but I think it would fit right in from a meticulously restored beyond factory quality, haha.

That garage still needs a family hauler though... Icon Suburban? Or Icon Centurion Conversion? I still have to wonder if that comes anywhere near close enough to modern safety standards though. Which is something I’d want for a family road trip vehicle.
