Which are then poorly maintained as not all states have inspections.

I think the average American would sh*t the bed with our strict yearly inspections

yep.

Texas still has a yearly inspection, though they’re pretty lax and there’s been talk of getting rid of the requirement. I sincerely hope we keep the inspections though, I see enough poorly maintained vehicles, dropping the inspection will only lead to more.

The yearly inspection or MOT is done on vehicles over three years old it can be anything from £30 to over £100 depending on where you can get it done the cheapest. All tests must be done at an authorised mot station.

We have a yearly inspection on cars over three years old but the government is thinking of changing it to cars four years and over and many people are up in arms that unsafe cars could be on the road.

Our MOT covers everything really.

Wow. That would be a failure and you’d have to get it fixed and then have it retested.

Such as when the car is tested you will get a list of advisories (ie slight tyre wear on outside of tyre (due to kerb rubbing)) which aren’t a failure but need addressed in due course to compulsory’s (ie SRS light on) which need to be fixed and then retested for it to pass.

Even a dent in the body where it causes a sharp crease that protrudes more than 2mm is a failure as it may harm a passing pedestrian while parked or in motion.

3. SRS light on

4. seat belt frayed

5. tie rod/rack end movement

I would think that over 4 years old would be fine. I still consider that a new car. And mine is only a year old, so it wouldn’t bother me anyway. Even when I was driving a 10 year old car the yearly inspections didn’t bother me, I do maintenance...

When our previous car went in for her first test she had an advisory on rear right hand tyre (from rubbing against the kerb) and that was it but some drivers heavily abuse their cars because they think just don’t care about them, even though they just forked out lots of money on a new car they don’t care, damage it, get another.

I don’t think a check engine light should be an automatic fail, It should depend on the codes thrown. Maybe I’ve just owned flaky old cars that would display the light but when I would run a code scanner, there would be no codes, very strange and no trouble when driving ever.

This would be a great fit for homeowners in certain west coast metro locations. Most of them have seen windfall property value escalations, a good portion of which can be attributed to the flood of offshore cash buyers (without “vetting”) who are using real estate as a money laundering casino, much as they have been allowed in Canuckistan for eons. Monies related to industrial production are no doubt enabling this, as much of it is corrupt/embezzling officials, after having palms greased to greenlight a project or being connected to it, then run where they know the axe won’t fall. This way you can support what feeds you.

Only bi-annual emissions checks here, and only for certain vehicles.

I do wonder how often one can pass if they spend money the right way (if you know what I mean), or if it is more about a make work project masquerading as safety. Then again, I know rust and rot are still big issues in Limeyland (unlike here), and it might take some dodgy stuff off the road.

Emissions and MOT check is done at the same time, with the road tax (properly known as Vehicle Excise Duty) paid on it.

It’s all done on the computer which keeps a record of the MOT test, if short cuts or take backs are found to be happening, they could at the very least lose their MOT status and get a very sizeable fine, etc...

Well you septics* have it quite easy while us limeys in limeyland have to the the line, lol. Rust isn’t as much an issue with modern day cars.

I suspect that’s a huge “if”caveat to the “are found”. These systems are almost made to be cheated. What I’d worry about most is suspension wear, and how salted roads can harm the undercarriage even if the body panels are intact.

In my area (where we have sewers :) ) , we have a yearly registration fee, based on an arcane and inaccurate valuation of a vehicle, as well as where the car is registered. My E250 Bluetec was around $600 this year (so much for low tax Murka), while (I believe it is the same in Blighty), the fintail is registration fee/tax exempt.

It’s all computer based and all records are available to be seen so any discrepancies would be easily found.

There are various agencies from Her majesty’s Customs and Excise to make sure your Vehicle Excise Duty (road tax) is paid, Vehicle and Operator Services Agency to check the road worthiness of your vehicle, police ANPR mobile (police car or static van) or fixed cameras on the motorway, etc... to check your vehicle has an MOT, road tax is paid, the driver has insurance, etc...

But then again in the U.S. you pay tax on buying a car privately. Here if the seller is wanting £1,000 for the car, you pay £1,000 for the car (unless you’ve managed to talk them down a little).

Kinja'd!!! "Svend" (svend)
11/29/2017 at 10:50, STARS: 1

Well back when we had it, it wasn’t £190 a year, but £100 I think it was, the system gets redressed every now and then.

It could be worse, a 2013 Aston Martin Vanquish has a CO2 output of 335g/km which means £535 a year.

I can’t imagine an Orwellian surveillance camera would be able to catch a garage/testing operator rubber stamping defective vehicles. Unless the competent and accountable authorities run sting operations or mystery shopper type testing, there’s an open door. The rest is the same here, it is relatively easy to know if a car doesn’t have current registration. Insurance, well, good luck with that, the FIRE lobby has made some things difficult.

The way taxes are handled in NA is goofy - never reflected in the price.

Kinja'd!!! "Svend" (svend)
11/29/2017 at 11:10, STARS: 0

The MOT test machines are hooked up via internet to several databases, VOSA do do spot checks and there are ways of reporting garages, also Trading Standards do checks to check they are doing the job they are getting paid to do and not cheating the system to make customers pay for unnecessary work.

If you took your car to an MOT testing station and then took your car to a garage (which also is connected to several databases) a garage can report the MOT test station.

There are places that do dodgy practices but there are a lot of agencies looking out for them.

I’m not iffy about the tracking or unnecessary work rather, cars that need a lot of legit work, but are passed for 100 quid - then the tester feigns ignorance or makes up a story if a different garage dared to tattle (I can’t imagine many would tell, even in a “report your family” society). Are MOT stations 100% independent from local garages? I know inspection stations in Murkan locations that require them have an easily bribed rep like that, and human nature is human nature.

Kinja'd!!! "Svend" (svend)
11/29/2017 at 18:46, STARS: 0

An ‘iffy story’ wouldn’t pass muster and they’d almost certainly lose MOT test status. Most MOT test stations are in fact garages themselves and garages wouldn’t mind telling on another garage because they themselves are the last garage to see the car so if anything went wrong, then the customer would take it up with them because the MOT station said it was okay, the garage didn’t say it wasn’t so the garage would be on the hook for repair. If it later came out that that the garage knew all wasn’t well then the mechanic at the garage may likely lose their job as the garage tries to cover their own back and the MOT station would be investigated.

Most garages and test stations wouldn’t want to risk losing their livelihood for the sake of a back hand or two.

Kinja'd!!! "fintail" (fintail)
11/29/2017 at 21:04, STARS: 0

If the customer just keeps returning to that specific garage, then everything works, right? :) The key is for a failing car to actually go wrong and get caught, it might not be a common occurrence. Never underestimate greed and a lack of forethought. Maybe the proof would be how many garages get in trouble, or if the trouble in reality isn’t more than a slap on the wrist.

Even in Germany where everyone is a pedantic stickler, I have seen stuff on the road that gives me doubts.

Kinja'd!!! "Svend" (svend)

Oh ye’, it happens. A colleague bought a used car in London for moving up to Edinburgh. When issues started happening they took it to the garage in Edinburgh, they took it to a garage and the garage asked where the hell they got it from as it was a deathtrap that shouldn’t be on the road.

Another bought a car and after a couple of weeks it broke down from over heating, on inspection found the radiator fan wasn’t plugged in.

I told the owner those plugs don’t just fall out (you had to push a clip down and really pull to remove the plug from the socket). I told her to take it back to the garage because it was clearly pulled so the fan didn’t come on during the test drive which would of high lighted the overheating issue.

These are unlikely to be anything to do with the MOT station but poor maintenance and an unscrupulous garage wanting to get shot of the vehicle and make a quick buck.

In the most part it’s not worth the risk as there are so many points of being caught.

Kinja'd!!! "fintail" (fintail)
11/29/2017 at 21:28, STARS: 0

I am surprised a garage would be stupid enough to do it to a car they were selling. I was thinking more they, at the agreement of a customer, would fake-pass a car for a fee - a car the customer was intending to keep, to drive rather than sink money to get it to legitimately pass. Some of the stuff with a privately sold car one could just claim broke since the inspection, but on a freshly passed car sold by the garage, yeah, that’s dumb.

Garages are seldom sellers of cars on this side of the pond.
