Kinja'd!!!

Another FJ. Confession time. I want one. Bad. Unfortunately the Toyota tax is real... For the price of a used FJ I might as well get a Land Cruiser. Which... Isn’t a bad idea? Uh-oh

I’d totally rock an old FJ. I just have this weird attraction to most 4x4's. I live in a rich pocket of already affluent NoVa, and every rich white kid gets a lifted jeep as their first car. Then they grow up and keep buying (and modding them). I see so many tastefully (and many more untastefully) modded jeeps on a daily basis that I kinda want one myself now lol. Just a very minor lift, new non-bro wheels, and good tires and I’m set. It’ll probably appreciate given how popular they are here!

Get a 3rd gen 4Runner, before they also become completely unaffordable.

They’re neat. But you’re right, they are holding onto their value like grim death. I know I’d rather have something older and cooler for my money.

Yeah. I’ve wanted one since they came out, but their prices have always been too high to justify...

Drive one and see how you like it. 4Runner is much more practical with only a small hit in off-road prowess.

Otherwise start learning your Landcruiser alphabet..

It’s too bad. Such a cool design. And most of the ones I see locally look like they get used for a lot more than just mall crawling

Yep. That’s the problem. I bet dollar for dollar you could find quite a few other vehicles that beat it in just about every metric. Besides the “style-factor” possibly

The blindspots and interior layout bug me. I’ve checked a few out at a local Toyota dealership, but I didn’t test drive.

4runner would probably be a better choice for me. Long enough to sleep in, and I’d get that tank-like house-on-wheels feeling that I lack with my Miata

Never saw the appeal of a modern FJ. I sat in one once and I had the sort of exterior view I’d imagine I’d get driving a submarine. And with similar fuel economy. Plus we had the diesel Prado...

It hard for me to imagine those going up in value, but I’m sure that’s what people said about *insert vehicle name here* too. Good call. Those seem to be the perfect old school/modern mix for a good adventure rig

They did the retro-modern thing so well. I agree 100% about the visibility, but I dig the style. Oddly enough, at least half of the ones I see locally are kitted out as somewhat serious overlanding rigs. They’re dirty on a regular basis, constantly being changed to find a better setup... The people who own these things seem to really love them and not want to give them up.

I bought one new in 2007. I should never have sold it. It was a great truck and you get used to the blind spots. Easy to drive and with non-mud terrain tires, it did great just bombing around the city.

They’re good. They’re probably as low as they’ll get. Especially if you don’t want the absolute base model

4th gen 4Runner has the Torsen center LSD standard on all trims. Rear locker was only available on the 2009 Trail Edition.

FJ only has the center LSD on the stick shift, the automatic is a stupid part-time shift-on-the-fly system. But the rear locker is more common.

They also fill a particular spot in the market that is severely underserved. The only distant competition is the Jeep Wrangler or something from 20+ years ago...

I’d be looking at older ones that would be missing at least a couple modern comforts like keyless entry or a CD player. But those are things I rarely have as it is with my cars.
