Looks like there might be a security flaw that lets people log in with the username root and a blank password if they attempt several times quickly.

It’s not a flaw, it’s a feature

Hah. That’s a flaw only a mechanic could find

“it’s not working!”

“try it again but harder!”

They’re gonna spin it as a backdoor to make sure you never get locked out of your computer because Apple is iPerfect and iDoesn’t iMake iMistakes.

I don’t have this problem because for the past 2 years I’ve been clicking “remind me tomorrow” every time it asks to upgrade.

Wait, as in physically sitting at your computer logging in? Not really concerned then. Meh.

It won’t even work like that. You cannot log in with root on any Mac and even most of the Linux distributions make you jump through hoops to enable the root account. This seems to be a vulnerability when you have to elevate your own privileges to make system changes etc. It allows any user to have super-user privileges. If someone uses parental controls on your Mac and the kids are halfway smart they will exploit it, I know I would have.

Some people seem to think it can be used for remote access as well. Though it may need to be done locally first to enable the root account. It’s not fully clear yet, but it is clear that it’s quite bad.
