I’m trying to start a car club at my small (>5,000 students) university. I already did a bit of feeling around, and I think there might be just enough student interest for this to get off the ground. I thought finding a professor to sponsor the club would be hard (it’s required), but after talking to my advisor, it turns out that one of the professors in my major owns this ‘73 Porsche . I just had a quick email conversation with him, and he seems like he’s down. Gonna go meet him in person tomorrow. Hopefully this goes well!

Update: I went to meed with him a little after noon, I actually bumped into him outside his office and he told me to drop my backpack in the office so we could take the old 911 for a ride. It’s a special car, to be sure. He gave it the beans going down an onramp, and I have to say that the flat six in that car absolutely sings. We drove around for a bit, then when back to his office, the whole time talking cars. He picked the 911 up for about ten grand (!) years ago and has been slowly restoring it ever since. It’s not perfect, but it’s a great driver. He’s a member of the local Porsche club chapter, so needless to say he was happy to volunteer as a sponsor for the club I’m trying to start. So yeah, you could say that went well.

Awesome! Good luck!

And, in college, you’ll find some people who are really interested in cars, but just currently stuck driving beigemobiles out of need, so you’ll probably get more interest than you think—

I might do the same thing, but the freshman cars are a bit lacking in interest so I’m not sure how many car guys there are. Although we do have a freshman with a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 so that’s neat.

Go for it! Hopefully your college isn’t anti-cars like the University of South Carolina is. Also, get people into SCCA/NASA if you can, because autocross and/or trackday, bro.

There are cars other than small crossovers and lifted trucks at college?

In all seriousness, good luck!

Awesome idea! I’ve been toying with it too for a while, but since the Netherlands has low car ownership under students,we’d probably only get few members. I might still go through with it though, might be something nice to leave behind at the university once I graduate next year.

Awesome!

Insurance in Ontario is too expensive for anyone to really have worthy cars, or be the primary operator of a car at all. Here, if you have, as an example, 3 cars and 3 drivers in the household, one must be listed as a primary operator for each, so the youth gets hit with a few grand/year in insurance.

Luck! You may not get a lot of interesting cars amongst the students because students are often poor, but you may get a bunch of aspirational car nuts, and that’s mostly what you need to have a good club anyway.

That’s what I’m after. Not a bunch of fancy cars, just a bunch of people who care about them.

Working on the same project right now. I wish finding a club advisor was as easy for me as it was for you.

My best advice: Ask faculty about other faculty. Worked much better for me than asking students about faculty. And when in doubt, stalk the parking lots.
