Since two of my daughters are studying abroad, we decided to bail on holiday decorating and gift buying and meet them in Europe for Christmas. Starting in Copenhagen the 24th - 27th and then to Rome and Florence thru the 1st, then back to Copenhagen to fly home on the 3rd. So far we just have Christmas day planned (Tivoli Gardens) ... any EurOppos (or well-traveled GringOppos) have any suggestions?

It’s been several years so I’m super excited about things like car spotting ... and of course every single meal in Italy. While I’m renting cars in both countries, we are 6 and limited to renting vans so a fun rental car review ain’t likely.

Nice! I haven’t traveled to those places so no advice to offer aside from recommending you get the insurance (or use a credit card with great coverage) on your rental. I scuffed up our Renault Captur in France earlier this year. D’oh.

I’d agree on the insurance - you’d be in places that you’re not as familiar with, so the peace of mind is worth extra.

Of for sure! I checked that $9/day full coverage box when I made the reservations.

Remember that frutti di mare means fruit of the sea. My wife doesn’t speak Italian and we were finishing up a month-long vacation through Germany, Austria, and northern Italy — in other words, we were not on speaking terms. So we go to dinner and she won’t ask me for help with the menu — she recognized frutti and assumed that it meant some sort of fruit salad (she doesn’t like seafood). Of course, I knew what she ordered and remained silent because — she was correct — I’m an ass. The look on her face when it showed up was priceless, I only wish I had taken a photo.

I did take pity on her, though, and switched dinners.

Have fun and be safe - I’ll never forget when I was studying abroad one of my friend’s parents came to visit for Christmas and wrecked their rental car on the way from the airport to town... it might have had something to do with it being the UK and driving on the other side of the road though.

Also, I’ve been to Rome for New Years. It was a blast. Make sure to get out with the crowds in one of the squares. I recommend a guided tour in Florence. Same thing if you go to the coliseum in Rome - you can obviously go in on your own but it’s worth a few bucks (or Euros) to have someone point out things that make it come to life.

We have an Airbnb in Rome that’s between the Vatican and Piazza del Popolo. There’s a package tour we’ll probably do that covers the Vatican and the Colosseum that sounds interesting. I’ve never been to Rome so I need to experience the super touristy stuff on this trip haha.

I’ve not spent that much time in Copenhagen, but if you like history type stuff the viking boat museum in Roskilde is really nice and the town itself is quite nice. It’s 30 miles or so away, so easy to get to by either train or by road.
