Kinja'd!!!

Craftsman- made of only the finest chinesium

This happened to my cousin. No cheater bar was being used and he had his hand over the head when it broke, gave him a nice cut in his palm.

Damn.

The one thing about Craftsman, to this day, you can still take it to any Sears and they will exchange it for a new one, no questions asked. That’s if you want a new Craftsman tool.

No wonder Trump doesn’t want to use chinese steel for anything in this country

That’s pretty wild. Obviously some kind of casting flaw to break like that. Or your cousin has super human strength, which would also be pretty wild.

Seriously...my cousin has broken this and two 1/2" to 3/8" adapters over the past week while tearing an engine apart. And he swears he wasn’t using any cheater bars

The Sears I passed on the way home from the airport today had big store closing signs on it. I’d guess it’s not the only one.

Yea, he’s going to go get the free replacement but said he’s going to pony up for a Snap-On to actually replace it

To be fair, breaking 1/2" to 3/8" is not exactly a hard thing to do. I’ve probably broken 10+ of those things and have definitely broken 2 in one job. I would only find it unusual if they were the hardened impact wrench variety ones.

True. I didn’t mention this, but while working on the same engine his buddy also broke a ratchet...his didn’t explode but the gears or whatever locking mechanism in the ratchet no longer engages so it just spins freely. His project may or may not be cursed

Maybe my tools are old enough (about 10-12 years) that they hadn’t cheaped out yet, but my Craftsman tools have been great.

And I even whack the crap out of the ratchets with a rubber mallet to get em moving some times. So far so great.

Only tools I’ve ever broken are Harbor Freight specials.

Ace carries Craftsman now too, just in case your local Sears in longer in business.

I can almost guarantee this is because Sears told their Chinese supplier(s) to build to a price point, rather than specs. They are happy to either but they will charge accordingly for the latter.

I still have some old USA made CM ratchets. At the Sears near me (probably the same everywhere), the old ratchets they replace with rebuilt USA made ratchets. If you break a Chinese one, they just pull a new one off the shelf.

Same here, except for one ratchet and one socket, both Craftsman. I don’t remember if I was using a cheater on the socket, but at least the new one was made in USA. No such luck with the new ratchet, though.

Craftsman has been garbage for at least 15 years. I know that because I was breaking sockets and ratchets regularly at 15. I bought a big set of Kobalts at 17 and only broke a few and mostly due to misuse. I have pretty much all Snap-On now with zero issues.

Smart move. I have a bunch of quality used ratchets. If I could afford new Snap -On, I’d do the same.

‘tis a shame, but all the more reason to either go high or low on tools. If you’re gonna get made-in-china garbage, might as well get the cheapest available stuff from Harbor Freight. Alternatively, pay 3-5x as much and get Snap-on.

Have him get a new Mac one. They have more teeth so a shorter swing, and they are nicer, and I believe cheaper (better value). The Snap-On ratchets are ancient compared to Matco and Mac, and they’re not any better for it.
